One of the most attractive elements of Ableton Live is its use in a Live performance context, you do the work in the studio then take it out on the road!

At the heart of Isotonik Studios is our obsession with Ableton Live Controllers. We simply can’t collect enough of them it would seem. Built up in a pile in our dining room we move through them changing our minds almost weekly on which one is the best.

The simple answer is that none of them are completely perfect, and that’s where we come in.

We’ve got a range of Control Surface Scripts for controllers that don’t usually get Ableton Live integration and for others we offer upgrades on the standard scripts with things like advanced Parameter and Mix Control.

Within each controller section we also list the integrated MaxforLive devices we have on offer, these work through the control surface to add layers of additional functionality, check out our Performance Templates for even deeper integration!

Ableton Live Controllers - Ableton Push One

The Ableton Push ONE was Abletons’ first foray into the hardware market.

As a joint venture with AKAI the Ableton Push One took many of the paradigms of MIDI Controllers already on the market and blessed them with a deeper integration with Ableton Live that only Ableton could achieve.

We’d seen grid based controllers before from AKAI but this marked a new level of quality with its almost svelte like casing and large LCD screen it felt more like an instrument than any before it.

Designed to be played with velocity sensitive buttons and the context led screen the Ableton Push presents the musician with a grid that can play notes, trigger drums or control the Session view depending on the chosen mode.

Whilst the Ableton Push ONE has now been superseded by the Push TWO, Ableton have continued to improve their original hardware with updates in Live 9.5 and above.

Ableton Live Controllers - Ableton Push TWO

Ableton signified their intent with the original Push, the release of Push Two took everyone by surprise!

As the Isotonik Collective contains a number of Crashologists (Abletons secret community of Alpha and beta testers) we got wind on the Ableton Push Two long before it was announced at the Loop Music Conference.

When we first opened the nondescript cardboard box it was delivered in we first searched for the AKAI logo, it was nowehere to be found, Ableton had gone it alone. The Push one was obviously popular enough to convince them that making their own hardware was the absolutely right direction to push the company forwards in. And they were right!

The main change was obvious, from the moment the controller was switched on the new full color screen was impressive!

The button layout had been re-configured, new lower profile switch buttons with a satisfying click to them to indicate interaction.

But it’s not just how it looked and felt, the integration was so much more. Have Ableton cracked it and created the ultimate Live controller?

Ableton Live Controllers - AKAI APC40 MKI

Buttons, Faders, Endless Encoders. Did AKAI crack it with their first Ableton Live Controller?

The AKAI APC40 (the 40 relates to the number of Clip Launch Buttons) was a rare beast when it was launched. Until that point all manners of MIDI controllers were used with Ableton Live, each with it’s own preferred mapping or rudimentary Control Surface script.

With the release of the APC40 it became apparent that this tank like controller could really start to bring together a live performance with just one piece of equipment.

The mainstay of the Ableton Live DJ you’d need a fairly hefty bag to transport it around but laid out in a booth or on a table it wasn’t going anywhere once you’d set it up.

With its Button Matrix available to launch clips and LED ringed Encoders to control parameters the APC40 still commands decent sums each time one comes up for sale on eBay!

Ableton Live Controllers - AKAI APC40 MKII

Deja VU? There was something very familiar about the APC40 MKII, and it took a while to put our finger on it. Not quite the five years it took AKAI to develop the APC40’s successor though.

But it was at least a month after the AKAI APC40 MKII landed with us that we noticed the similarity to the MPD controllers, it was as if AKAI had a load of cases left over and decided to squeeze the internals of the APC40 into an MPD case.

So a new look, what else got improved? Well we’ll take it as flattery that some of the features we built into Isotonik our first MaxforLive Performance Template made it into the MKII as standard features.

First up was the change of Button Matrix, away from the tri-color status for clips used by the MKI and the Novation LaunchPad, to visually represent the RGB colors of the clips in control within the Ring Focus Box in Session View.

Secondly the revised Fader design, a godsend for anyone who’d tired of digging underneath cabinets to find misplaced fader caps or had to get out the pliers to bend them back into shape!

Ableton Live Controllers - Korg NanoKontrol Studio

Want to go to the middle of the dancefloor and still control Ableton Live? Don’t want the USB Cable tripping people up?

The Korg NanoKontrol Studio may well be the answer you’ve been looking for! With it’s battery powered Bluetooth connection to your laptop you can merrily dance away and control your Ableton Live set at the same time.

We loved the original Nano series, this one though is that bit more sturdy and has travelled with us for the last year or so.

Shipped by Korg with five user defined modes we’ve created a complete Ableton Live Control Surface Script for it that will enable you to control your Live Session, the Mix and your devices by switching between the first three layers.

With our script in place you can then sync it to other controllers with LaunchSync or define how each Instrument, VST, AU or MaxforLive device automaps to the Encoders with the PrEditor Mapping Utility.

Our Combo Packs represent excellent value for money and the complete solution for advanced parameter control, this pack includes our control surface script for the Korg NanoKontrol Studio. Our PrEditor Mapping Utility for Ableton Live goes from strength to strength, you can read further details here or take a look at the summary below by Peter Kirn of Create Digital Music... "Isotonik’s PrEditor is the powerful mapping functionality Ableton forgot. It lets you customize the mappings of a variety of controllers to your music software, opening up custom controller arrangements and tailored interactions to support the way you play. And the latest version does still more. Hackers and patchers will love this – whatever tool they use. If you use Reaktor, that environment is available – doubly useful now because of Reaktor’s beautiful Blocks modular environment. (There are quite a few things I prefer in Reaktor, so being able to map its controls to my Push means I may completely rethink how I do some of my live sets.)"

Ableton Live Controllers - LaunchControl XL

When my non Ableton Dj friends saw the LaunchControl XL for the first time everything started to click into place.

The Novation LaunchControl XL didn’t bring anything particularly new that we hadn’t seen before but what it did do was deliver it’s promise in a truly great controller.

In line with the rest of the Novation Launch gear and it’s 8 track orientation it was obvious to the untrained immediately how this MIDI Controller could be put to use.

For an instant DJ Live template pair it with a LaunchPad and our LaunchSync Series and you can sync the two controllers together to navigate around a giant live set of audio clips.

Want to use the LaunchControl XL in a production context? Then our LaunchControl XXL Control Surface script with it’s ability to control 24 parameters at a time is essential. Upgrade the script with the Channel Strip extension and you can control 8 Effect Racks across 8 tracks dynamically so control moves with your Ring Focus Box.

Ableton Live Controllers - Maschine JAM

Native Instruments entered the Ableton Live Controller world with a bang when they launched the Maschine Jam and we’ve got big plans for it!

The Maschine JAM offers the obligatory 8 x 8 Clip Launch grid that we’ve seen before on controllers like the LaunchPad, but then it surpasses many of the competitors with it’s TouchStrip faders.

As you navigate around your set you’ll never have to worry about moving a fader and having a worrying jump in parameters as the LED bordered touch strips update to show their current values.

We’ve only touched the surface of what this controller can do so far, we’re looking forward to bringing the generative sequencer magic of the Arcade Series to it in a future update!

First though we’ve been working with the Native Instruments team in Berlin. We’ve seen all of our feature requests included in the latest update to the control surface so we’ve been able to make it LaunchSync Series compatible.

Ableton Live Controllers - Novation Launchpad

The LaunchPad wasn’t the first 8 x 8 Grid Controller but it’s definitely become the most popular!

Treading ground that we’d seen from the Monome the Novation LaunchPad presented a simple 8 x 8 grid of clip launching buttons for Ableton Live. In it’s first iteration it added a trip-color arrangement to show where clips were present, playing or recording.

Novation we’re obviously onto a winner and so the LaunchPad MINI joined the fray before we saw upgrades to full RGB buttons to represent the colors of clips and then the release of the bigger brother the LaunchPad PRO with it’s velocity sensitive buttons more akin to the Ableton Push.

As the second controller that we hacked to create a MaxforLive Performance template it still holds an affectionate place in our hearts and rarely will the LaunchPad MINI leave our bag when we travel.

It’s only downside is a lack of knobs and faders, but when you’ve got the LaunchControl XL in the line up you’re pretty much sorted!

Ableton Live Controllers - AKAI MIDIMIX

AKAI are proven manufacturers of Ableton Live controllers setting out there stall early on with the APC40 MKI so when they announced a new controller we got a little excited all over again.

The AKAI MIDIMIX seemed on paper to be a nicely laid out controller, 8 track paradigm like many others, small footprint etc.

Picking it up for the first time the similarities to the APC MINI were obvious, it was after all shoehorned into the exact same casing as it’s more Ableton Live focused sibling.

With a similar arrangement to the LaunchControl XL we understandably couldn’t see a gap in the marketplace that this little controller was going to fill, that was until the price was announced. Coming in at roughly half the cost of other controllers this was an awful lot of controller for little outlay.

It’s budget beating stance gave us an opportunity, shipped without a particularly strong Ableton Live Control Surface script we’ve weaved some magic on it and given the ability to control 24 parameters at a time along with PrEditor and LaunchSync compatibility.

    • LaunchSync compatibility, with this you can use the MIDIMIX as the Master or Slave controller linking it with an Ableton Push or adding further controls to an AKAI APC40 or a Novation LaunchPad!
    • 24 Parameter device control, simply tap the SOLO button and the Mute buttons control the selection of the first 8 devices on the Track in focus, the REC ARM buttons turn the devices on and off whilst the 24 Potentiometers Blue Hand Map to the device in focus….
    • Bank Left and Bank Right then allow you to cycle through all of the available parameters, so grab hold of an Operator and have complete control over your tweaking with just one controller!
    • Further options for controlling three sends on the Pots rather than just two and the Pan which is switchable from the controller when enabled in the Config.txt file. And there’s a choice of Returns Mode as well…

The LaunchSync Series  began life over the coffee table in the office of Novation, the team there had an idea of syncing together their LaunchPad family with the forthcoming LaunchControl XL. As we developed the idea it became apparent that everyone has a different view of what made the perfect performance set up, whether it be an Ableton  Push based one or revolve around an APC40MKII  the same things became clear!

Ableton Live Controllers - Allen & Heath

Allen & Heath make the DJ mixers that i dream of owning, their XONE range is found in the worlds most prestigious booths (and one day my front room).

When Paul Van Dijk first toured his Ableton Live setup it was with an Allen & Heath 4D mixer. Combining DJ Mixer and MIDI Controller the 4D was a mammoth and out of the price range of many aspiring DJ’s. The masterstroke was breaking out the MIDI Controllers to become the 1D and then developing it further into the K1 & K2 controllers we work with today.

We know the team at Allen & Heath like our Control Surface Script, with it’s Session Control turning the 4 x 4 grid of buttons into a mini APC40 and our MaxforLive Performance Template adding in control of parameters with switchable layers.

Want to use two controllers at the same time, well you can always sync them together with LaunchSync and double the amount of tracks you can control.

Isotonik Allen & Heath K Series – Performance Template

    Price £27.50

The Allen & Heath K2 and K1 MIDI Controllers are a blank canvas ready for standard MIDI mapping, but of course that wasn’t enough for us here at Isotonik Studios, so we teamed up with Sigabort and started to brew our own solution!

The first step was to bring some APC40 style functionality to the controller as standard, you’ll benefit from the Red Box Clip Launch Rectangle on screen with clip launching from the 4 x 4 grid of buttons and with the two endless controllers at the bottom of the controller you can scroll the Red Box around the screen

As you navigate around your Ableton Live set the faders automatically map to the Volume of each track and the Pots control Send A, B and C volume. With the buttons being given over to control the Solo/Cue, Mute and Rec Arm you have a truly portable mixing solution…

Ableton Live Controllers - Behringer

The range of products from genius Uli Behringer is impressive, from Synths to PA systems and everything in-between.

Two of our favourites away from the excellent synths they’ve produced are the Behringer BCR and BCF 2000’s. Tank like in appearance this pair of MIDI Controllers could well be the perfect setup for an Ableton Live set if you can afford the space.

AKAI must’ve taken cues from the LED ringed Encoders of the BCR when they set about designing the APC40, with our Control Surface Script you’ll see the LED’s update as you move around your set and control devices. We’ve even extended it so that you could control up to 32 parameters at the same time, perfect for controlling a complicated VST like Diva! Of course you’ll want PrEditor so you choose exactly which parameters each encoder will automap to!

Then there’s the BCF, the F is for fader obviously, with it’s giant motorised faders that glide to the correct position when you move around your set. From an Ableton DJ perspective this could be the ultimate mixing desk, you’ll just need a MIDI Controller with some buttons to trigger clips & LaunchSync to sync the two together.

PrEditor 2 & Behringer BCF XL – Combo Pack

    Price £55.00
With it’s motorised faders and LED ringed encoders it’s a surprise to us that no-ones yet come up with a definitive script for it, we’d like to think that we’ve solved that conundrum and with this script the oft forgotten controller can once again have the dust brushed off it and take pride of place in the Ableton Live Performers set up. Pair it with PrEditor 2 for even more configurability! The Push Encoders at the top of the device can be used to select tracks as well as being switchable between Mixer Mode, where you can choose which Send is being controlled for each of the eight tracks, with our Config.txt you can define whether this mode switches to control Pan on each track instead. The Buttons beneath give you Mute and Solo, or if you prefer you can switch configuration to look after Solo and Arm instead. And much more...

    Price £40.00

PrEditor is an application that allows you to configure how selected MIDI Controllers map within Ableton Live to Instruments, FX, VSTs, AUs & MaxforLive Devices

With a simple and intuitive graphical interface you can:

    • Build up your parameters in banks & customise the name of your banks for display on the Push 1 & 2 screen, with up to 64 banks for each mapping
    • Customise the naming of each parameter for display on the Push 1 & 2 screen, great for VSTs that aren't developed with the Push display in mind or MaxforLive devices that would only display Bank 1, Bank 2 etc.
    • Re-Arrange, re-order, copy and paste banks
    • Have blank spaces & Map a parameter multiple times across different banks
    • Access all of the hidden parameters of Live's devices that were previously only available to Push 1 & 2 (awesome when using one of our custom Control Surface Scripts!)
    • Unlock the access to all of the parameters in a MaxforLive device!
    • Create maps for MultiMap VST/AU devices like Native Instruments Reaktor & Kontakt and Diva

Ableton Live Controllers - LaunchControl

If you’re looking for a compact yet sturdy MIDI Controller set up then the LaunchControl may just be the starting point.

The Novation LaunchControl packs an awful lot into a tiny box. Designed primarily to sit in front of a laptop it’s small frame gives you the ability to control Ableton Lives main functions including Session and Parameter Control.

16 Knobs, 8 Buttons, 16 banks, it all adds up to a possible 448 controls which should be more than enough for any user. You can of course painstakingly MIDI map every one of those controls, but then you lose the dynamic nature of navigating around your Ableton Live set. That’s where our Control Surface Script comes in with it’s on screen ring focus box to show you what you’re controlling and 16 Parameter Controls at the same time. It’s also compatible with PrEditor should you want to define exactly how each parameter of your Live devices, VST’s, AU’s and MaxforLive devices AutoMap with the blue hand control.

As an add on controller you’ll see it in most press photos lined up next to a LaunchPad so you’ll want to sync the two together rather than having to remember where each one is in your set, that why you need LaunchSync
