AKAI APC40 MKI
Buttons, Faders, Endless Encoders. Did AKAI crack it with their first Ableton Live Controller?
The AKAI APC40 (the 40 relates to the number of Clip Launch Buttons) was a rare beast when it was launched. Until that point all manners of MIDI controllers were used with Ableton Live, each with it’s own preferred mapping or rudimentary Control Surface script.
With the release of the APC40 it became apparent that this tank like controller could really start to bring together a live performance with just one piece of equipment.
The mainstay of the Ableton Live DJ you’d need a fairly hefty bag to transport it around but laid out in a booth or on a table it wasn’t going anywhere once you’d set it up.
With its Button Matrix available to launch clips and LED ringed Encoders to control parameters the APC40 still commands decent sums each time one comes up for sale on eBay!
