Step Arpeggiator by Udo R. Bräuna

The Step Arpeggiator MaxforLive device gives you the ability to program a pattern and it will play the notes of the chord according to the pattern.

You can save up to 16 patterns that will save with the live set, and you can store them on an external file to use it whenever you want.

The patterns can be up to 32 steps long and up to 16 simultaneous notes.

In the matrix, you can select one or more cells to trigger a single note or a chord in every step.
And with the lower row, you can select if you want to play the next or previous note, that way you can set the arpeggiator to “up” or “down” like any other arp.

STEP ARPEGGIATOR MODES

Round-robin mode: If the chord played has less notes than the arpeggiator pattern, you can select what to do with the highest notes: round-robin, top-note or no-note, and it will show a visual representation accordingly.

Visual Swing mode: When you click at the swing amount, it will open a visual representation of the musical notation of what it’s doing. This way you know if you’re playing like a “triplet” swing (2:1), or like a “quintuplet” (3:2), etc.

And of course, Step Arpeggiator has all the other things an arpeggiator have. Like Sync/Free Rate (with triplets and dotted notes), Duration (aka Gate) of every note, Swing on/off, Swing Amount (groove), Retrigger options, a Transpose option, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Step Arpeggiator is a pattern-based Max for Live arpeggiator that lets you define exactly which notes play at each step, rather than relying on preset up/down/random modes. You build your own patterns in a step matrix, giving you precise control over the arpeggio behaviour without wrestling with complex settings.

Each pattern can be up to 32 steps long and support up to 16 simultaneous notes per step, so you can trigger single notes or full chords at any point in the sequence. You can save up to 16 patterns within a Live set, and also export them to an external file for use in other projects.

Yes, the lower row of the matrix lets you select whether each step plays the next or previous note in the chord, so you can easily recreate classic up or down arpeggio behaviour alongside your own custom patterns.

The device handles this with a round-robin mode and additional options including top-note, so you can choose how the arpeggiator behaves when it runs out of chord notes. This keeps your patterns musically coherent regardless of the chord size you play.

You need Ableton Live with Max for Live installed, either as part of Live Suite or as the Max for Live add-on with Live Standard. It functions as a MIDI effect device, so it sits in your MIDI chain before an instrument.

Yes, patterns save automatically with your Live set, and you can also store them in an external file to load into any project whenever you need them. This makes it straightforward to build a personal library of arpeggio patterns over time.

Absolutely. The ability to store up to 16 patterns within a single Live set and switch between them makes it well suited to both studio work and live performance. Triggering different patterns on the fly gives you a lot of expressive flexibility on stage.

Important Information

V1.0.2 – Released – February 2023

Fixed a bug that the rate knob didn’t load properly when the Live’s transport wasn’t playing.

V1.0.1 – Initial Release – February 2023

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.

.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.

.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
