Very cool and flexible melody and rhythm machine. With great UI. Would be sweet to have a couple presets for it, the first thing I did to it was resave the initial preset to be more "initial" if you know what I mean. But I am looking forward to getting off work today and going to make some sweet stuff with it!

WHAT IS MIDI WAVES?

Midi Waves is an experimental midi note generator and modulator.

Midi messages such as pitch, velocity, duration and gate are generated using LFOs that can be all set independently to create midi events and patterns that could otherwise be hard to achieve using a sequencer or a keyboard.

Because each item in the list has its own LFO, each of those LFOs can be offset from each other to create these unusual cascading events that go in and out of phase and go off kilter with each, other but are still snapped to a musical scale so they can sound quite pleasing and can enable you to come up with very interesting, beautiful phrases or perhaps weird ones or scary ones or perhaps nothing at all. It’s entirely up to you!

In Live, the output of the device can be routed to another Midi track where the notes it generates can be captured to regular midi, enabling you to capture moments that inspire.

Frequently Asked Questions

MIDI Waves uses LFOs to generate and modulate MIDI messages including pitch, velocity, duration, and gate. Each parameter has its own independent LFO, which means they can drift in and out of phase with each other to create cascading, evolving patterns that would be very difficult to programme manually.

All generated notes are snapped to a musical scale, so even the more chaotic settings tend to produce something that sounds coherent and musical. You can dial in anything from beautiful melodic phrases to unsettling, unpredictable sequences depending on how you set the LFOs.

MIDI Waves is a Max for Live device, so you will need Ableton Live Suite or a copy of Live Standard with a separate Max for Live licence. We recommend keeping both Live and Max for Live updated to the latest versions for the best experience.

Yes. In Ableton Live you can route the output of MIDI Waves to another MIDI track and record the generated notes directly. This lets you capture happy accidents and turn them into fixed MIDI clips you can edit and build on.

It is firmly in the generative camp rather than a traditional step sequencer. Instead of programming a fixed pattern, you set LFO shapes and rates and let the device produce MIDI events organically, with the interplay between the independent LFOs driving the variation.

It works brilliantly for ambient, experimental, and electronic music where evolving, unpredictable melodic or rhythmic content is desirable. It is also a great compositional tool for any producer looking to break out of repetitive patterns and stumble onto ideas they would never have thought to programme themselves.

Drop the Max for Live device file into your Ableton Live User Library or drag it directly into a MIDI track in Live. Once placed on a track, point that track’s output at an instrument to start hearing results straight away.
