Poly 61 by Cluster Sound

Poly 61 is an inspiring multi-sample collection created with the gorgeous Poly 61, released by Korg during the mid 80s. A gritty and charmingly lo-fi analog synthesizer with a bold Electro character.

Released in 1983, the Poly-61 was KORG´s successor to the Polysix. These two great machines have very little in common: the Polysix features a single VCO and a SSM2044 filter whereas the Poly 61 implements two DCOs (digitally controlled analog oscillators) and a custom design of the LM13600 filter, used in the later Korg MS-20. A big plus on the Poly 61´s side is the second oscillator, which can be detuned but also intervalled. This makes the Poly-61 more flexible than its predecessor, with a distinct sonic character.

Gritty and Lo-Fi

The Poly-61 is an incredibly versatile machine. While not delving deeply into sound experimentation, this machine can generate a wide range of sounds, each characterized by its own unique imprint. The very fast envelopes produce raspy analog sounds, spanning from growling electro basses to rugged brasses, evocative leads, lush pads, and rough organ tones. The overall sound of the Poly-61 is gritty and pleasantly lo-fi, so it’s no surprise that it has been used, among many others, by artists like Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada.

The Live version of Poly 61 has been designed to perfectly fit into your Ableton Live. All the included devices can be directly installed in your “Packs” section and previewed when selected in the Live browser. They have also been organized in Live standardized categories so that you can find them also in the browser’s “Categories” section. Moreover, all the sounds included in Poly 61 have similar perceived volumes and feature 4 macro control templates with volume compensation to avoid unwanted distortions.

The Kontakt version of Poly 61 includes PRIMUS, a virtual instrument with an ultra-friendly interface and a solid set of synthesizer parameters. All the sounds included in JD SYNTHS can be easily selected using the Waveform menu and then tweaked using 25 different filters with cutoff and resonance, one multishape LFO assignable to Filter, Volume and Pitch and two envelopes for filter and amplifier. PRIMUS implements also a Glide effect, a Unison with up to 4 stacked voices and a set of built-in effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Poly 61 is compatible with both Kontakt and Ableton Live, giving you flexibility depending on your preferred workflow. Make sure you check the specific version requirements for each platform before purchasing.

Yes, the full retail version of Kontakt is required to load the Kontakt instrument properly. It will not run permanently in Kontakt Player due to the free player’s time-limit restrictions on third-party libraries.

The pack covers the Poly-61’s characteristic range, including gritty electro basses, punchy leads, lush pads, and atmospheric textures. It captures the distinctly lo-fi, analogue character that made this Korg synth a cult favourite.

The Poly-61 uses two DCOs and a custom LM13600 filter, giving it a grittier, bolder sonic character compared to many of its contemporaries. The ability to detune or interval the second oscillator adds extra depth and flexibility that sets it apart.

Poly 61 is a multi-sample collection, meaning the sounds are built from detailed recordings of the original hardware synth. It is not a synthesiser emulation, so what you get is the genuine character of the real instrument.

You will need Ableton Live with Sampler or the relevant device used to build the instrument, so Live Suite or a version with Sampler included is recommended. Check the product documentation for the exact minimum version supported.

After purchase you will receive a download link for the pack files. For Kontakt, add the library folder and load the patches directly from the browser. For Ableton Live, drag the relevant files into your library following the included instructions.
