Sound Oracle Shares His Drum Workflow & Live 12 Drum Racks—Packed with Hip-Hop Legacy
Sound Oracle unpacks how he designed Ableton Live 12’s new drum kits for fast workflow, expressive MPE use, and high-level production, all while staying true to classic and modern hip-hop sounds.
Inside the Workflow, Sound Design, and Creative Process Behind the New Trap and Golden Era Kits
Ableton Live 12 introduces an exciting addition to its sound library with new drum racks designed by veteran producer Sound Oracle. Known for his work with legends like Timbaland and Jay‑Z, Sound Oracle brings decades of experience to this collection, which fuses high-quality sounds with streamlined workflows and expressive control.
What’s Included in the Drum Packs
Live 12 users gain access to two core drum packs:
- Golden Era Hip-Hop Drums: 20 kits that embody the essence of classic boom-bap
- Trap Drums: 20 modern kits packed with punch, 808s, and hard-hitting percussion
Each kit is mapped with macros and MPE features designed to interact with Push 3. The expressive pads respond to touch, pressure, and position to shape effects like filtering, reverb, and modulation. In addition, four additional drum racks are included in the Core Library, along with two 808 selector racks with a built-in scrolling function for quick sound selection.
Workflow Built for Speed
Sound Oracle highlights the importance of speed and clarity in music production. The drum racks were built to allow quick pattern creation and effortless kit switching. This reduces time spent hunting for samples and boosts creativity.
The approach is all about having a structure in place—load a pattern, dial through kits, and lock in the vibe without breaking momentum. The goal is to help producers focus on making music instead of managing files or effects.
MPE with Musical Intent
While MPE can often be used as a gimmick, Sound Oracle implemented it intentionally. The macros respond to finger position on Push 3, triggering subtle effects like bitcrushing, filtering, or slight delay to enhance the sound. These mapped expressions are designed to serve the musicality of each kit, not distract from it.
For example, in the Golden Era kits, the focus is on understated, gritty textures that complement the genre, rather than flashy sound design. Every macro and mapping is there to deepen the groove and highlight the emotion in the performance.
A Disciplined Sample Library
Sound Oracle keeps his sample selection lean and purposeful. He avoids bloated packs, trimming down thousands of sounds to a tight, focused selection. Each kit is under a few hundred megabytes, curated for usability and impact.
He also refreshes his go-to sounds every few months to stay inspired. Kicks, snares, hats, and loops are all prepped in advance, ready to be dropped in without additional tweaking. This preparation is what enables fast sessions and professional results.
Respecting Time and Creativity
At the heart of his philosophy is respect—for the artist, the collaborators, and the listener. Being organized and ready allows the creative process to flow without interruption. It’s not just about being fast, but about being thoughtful and prepared. The new drum racks in Live 12 are a reflection of that mindset: streamlined, expressive, and built to inspire.
