Designing Ableton’s Performance Pack: Iftah on Creativity & Live Control
Iftah Gabbai’s Performance Pack redefines what it means to perform with Ableton Live. More than just tools—it’s a framework for improvisation, structural control, and creative exploration. From mapping macros to looping live ideas, Iftah shows how constraints, curiosity, and craft converge in powerful performance.
Iftah Gabbai, the Max for Live mastermind behind CV Tools, Microtuner, Time & Timbre—and now Ableton Live 12’s Performance Pack—joins the Music Production Podcast to unpack his creative approach. From setting constraints to enabling spontaneity, Iftah shares the design philosophy that drives his tools and workflows.
Creative impulses and constraints
At the heart of Iftah’s process is the belief that limitations inspire innovation. Whether through coding new Max for Live devices or using modular hardware, his artistic output thrives within defined boundaries. This mindset translates directly into the way he builds tools—not to automate, but to provoke fresh ideas.
The Performance Pack revealed
Aimed squarely at live performers and improvisers, the Performance Pack includes four Max for Live devices: Performer, Variations, Arrangement Looper, and Prearranger. Each one serves a unique function, but together they transform Ableton into a more fluid, reactive performance instrument.
Performer
This device lets users build custom control surfaces inside Live. You can design macro layouts, apply modulation curves, and route MIDI or CV—perfect for those looking to interact with their setup on a more expressive level.
Variations
Save snapshots of entire device chains or clip settings and flip between them in real-time. Great for live performance or compositional sketching, especially with quantised switching and trigger mapping.
Arrangement Looper
Loop on the fly in Arrangement View—a long-requested feature. You can loop different sections of your timeline live, with quantisation and full visual feedback, ideal for sketching ideas mid-set.
Prearranger
This tool brings spontaneity to song structure. You can assign clips to sections, build arrangements dynamically, or generate new forms live based on predefined rules.
Why it matters
These aren’t just utilities—they’re expressive tools that encourage play and performance. Iftah’s designs help artists push past rigid workflows and rediscover live experimentation, all without leaving the DAW.
Beyond tools: mindset & wellbeing
Creativity isn’t just about output. Iftah reflects on taking breaks, rediscovering motivation, and why watching others use his tools brings as much joy as building them. It’s a reminder that creativity is a cycle—and nurturing it matters as much as the next big release.
