Mastering Live Sets in Ableton Live: How Miles Kvndra Builds His Final Output Rack
Master your live set like a pro using only stock Ableton effects. Miles Kvndra walks through his Push 3-compatible mastering rack for EQ, compression, limiting, and stereo control.
Shape a Polished, Punchy Sound for Your Live Show – with Only Ableton Stock Devices
Getting your live set to sound as tight and powerful as a studio master—without over-processing or flattening dynamics—is a tough challenge. In this in-depth tutorial, Miles Kvndra breaks down his custom mastering live rack built entirely with Ableton Live’s stock effects. Designed for performance on Push 3 in standalone mode, this rack helps balance levels, tame mud, and enhance clarity across your entire set—whether you’re performing with Elektron gear, analog synths, or internal samples.

Why Mastering a Live Set Is Different
In a studio mix, you master one track at a time. But in a live show, multiple tracks with wildly different characteristics need to hit the same perceived loudness and clarity—consistently, and without venue-specific distortion. Miles’ rack addresses this by:
- Gently equalizing highs and lows to shape tonal balance
- Compressing across multibands to control punch and dynamics
- Applying limiting and saturation to increase loudness without distortion
It’s not about pushing every element—it’s about gently guiding your whole set toward a cohesive, energetic sound.
What’s in the Rack? A Three-Stage Processing Chain
Miles organizes his rack into three sections, each mapped to Push macros for quick live tweaking:
1. Equalization
- EQ Eight: High shelf cuts at 20kHz and a low cut around 30Hz to remove unwanted rumble and free up headroom.
- Channel EQ: Subtle -2.5dB cut around 300Hz (to reduce mud) and a small high boost for added clarity.
“This gentle dip in the mids and boost in the highs just makes the mix sound cleaner and more forward.”
2. Compression
- Multiband Dynamics: Compresses lows more aggressively (ratio ~1.5:1) and treats mids/highs more gently to tighten the mix without flattening it.
- Glue Compressor: Light compression (~1.5dB gain) to “glue” the mix together just before limiting.
“The multiband comp balances the low end, while the glue compressor smooths peaks for the limiter.”
3. Limiting & Stereo Control
- Utility: Mono-izes the subbass and allows mono checking and stereo widening.
- Color Limiter: Adds subtle saturation and warmth, while boosting perceived loudness.
- Limiter (Ableton stock): Final stage limiter adding up to 5dB gain, ceiling set to 0dB.
“Push 3 Standalone doesn’t support third-party plugins, so I wanted a 100% stock-device chain—and this one works beautifully.”
Key Performance Benefits
- Macro Controls: All key parameters (EQ, compression, stereo width, limiter) are assigned to macros, giving live control on Push or any MIDI controller.
- Live Optimization: If a sound is too boomy on a club system, Miles can immediately adjust EQ or compression on the fly.
- Mono Compatibility: Built-in mono switch allows easy A/B checking for systems with mono subs or small PA setups.
A/B Comparison: Unprocessed vs Processed
Miles runs a quick before/after demo with the rack bypassed and re-enabled. The difference is obvious—clearer lows, more punch, tighter mids, and smoother transitions across tracks.
“It just sounds more organized, like everything is sitting where it should be—without being overly squashed.”
