The History
FM synthesis revolutionized digital sound in the ’80s with the Yamaha DX7. With Broken FM, we bring that legacy to Ableton Note for the first time, reimagining its iconic tones with today’s sonic tools.
We used the Drift Device to simulate classic FM algorithms, creating expressive and complex patches from scratch. Alongside this, we recorded samples directly from our original DX7, then treated them with tape mastering effects to bring added warmth, character, and lo-fi flavor.
But we didn’t stop there: Broken FM also captures the futuristic tones of Elektron’s Digitone 2, using custom-recorded samples to blend classic DX-style voices with modern FM depth. Every sample was meticulously sculpted to showcase Digitone’s harmonics and textured modulation—giving you fresh FM tones with a raw, contemporary twist.
Inspired by artists like Legowelt and Cenk aka Dateline, this pack bridges the gap between retro hardware grit and modern experimental sound design. Whether you’re after spaced-out ambient textures or tight, hypnotic techno rhythms, Broken FM lets you sculpt the future of sound—your way.
