Really clever and very versatile M4L device, has already become a go-to for creative modulation. I really love the interface in particular, just enough depth to get into the weeds quickly but extremely approachable. Just so inviting to get lost in, amazing work!

A very fun modulation device to play around with. You can go from calm and controlled to absolutely wild and crazy whenever you feel like it. Awesome. Good work!

Excellent M4L modulation device with a lot of control available. Strikes a powerful balance between regularity and more chaotic behaviour.

A fantastic Max For Live Device that allows for a beautifully unpredictable, yet smooth, LFO output. I'm currently using it as a part of a lofi vibrato/tape-warping sound. It's gorgeous!

Knob Studio by Alessandro aylesim Miracapillo

Knob Studio is a Max for Live device for Ableton that gives you new ways to experiment with parameter mapping. It uses customizable waveforms and reading heads to create evolving modulations for your sounds.

Here’s what Knob Studio offers:

Waveform Section: This is where you create the waveform that controls your mappings. You can combine different function types to make simple or complex shapes.

Function Types:

  • Waveform: Choose basic shapes like sine or square, adjust cycles, speed, and amplitude.
  • R Function: Add controlled randomness to specific areas.
  • Ramp: Create custom transitions between values.
  • Knob/External: Set fixed values or map to external controls.

Reading Head Modes:

  • Manual: Position the reading head yourself or map it to an external control.
  • LFO: Let the reading head move automatically with adjustable shapes and settings.
  • Envelope Follower: Use your audio signal to drive the reading head movement.
  • Randomization: Need inspiration? Hit the dice button to activate 2-4 functions randomly. Choose how they’re distributed: spaced out, overlapping, or completely free.

Mapping Area: This is where you connect Knob Studio’s output to Live’s parameters. You can see the resulting waveforms in real-time and adjust global settings like smoothness and jitter.

Knob Studio is designed for both precise control and unexpected discoveries. Whether you’re fine-tuning a specific sound or looking for new ideas, it gives you a different approach to shaping your music.

If you enjoy diving deep into sound design or just want a new way to add movement to your tracks, Knob Studio can help you find new possibilities within Ableton Live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Knob Studio requires Ableton Live with Max for Live installed. It is recommended you run the latest version of both to ensure full compatibility and stability.

You build a custom waveform by combining different function types, including basic shapes like sine and square, randomness via the R Function, custom transitions with Ramp, and fixed or externally mapped values using the Knob/External option. This composite waveform then drives your parameter mappings in Ableton.

The reading head determines how the waveform is read over time. In Manual mode you position it yourself or map it to an external control, while LFO mode lets it move automatically, creating continuously evolving modulations without any extra effort.

Knob Studio can be mapped to any automatable parameter within Ableton Live, making it suitable for modulating synthesiser settings, effect parameters, mixer controls, and much more.

Absolutely. The ability to map the reading head to an external control means you can manipulate modulations in real time during a live set, making it just as powerful on stage as it is in the studio.

Simply drag the Max for Live device file into your Ableton Live User Library or directly onto a MIDI or audio track. No additional software or configuration is required beyond having Max for Live active.

Yes, and it is well worth doing so. If you purchase three or more Aylesim products at the same time, a 20% discount is automatically applied at checkout, making it a great opportunity to build out a complementary set of tools.

Important Information

V1.0.0 – Initial Release – August 2024

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.

.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.

.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
