iZotope’s RX is legendary for audio repair, but it’s also infamous for crushing your CPU when used as a plugin inside Ableton Live. Want the power of RX without glitching your session? Here’s a smarter way: use it as a standalone editor—directly from Ableton’s browser. This simple hack can save your CPU, your session, and your sanity.
Step 1: Set RX as the Default Sample Editor
- Open Ableton Preferences (
Cmd + ,on Mac /Ctrl + ,on Windows) - Go to File/Folder > Sample Editor
- Click Browse, navigate to iZotope RX, and select it
- Now RX is your go-to for audio sample editing directly from Live
Step 2: Editing in RX from Ableton
- Duplicate the sample in Live with
Cmd + Dto protect the original - Consolidate the duplicate with
Cmd + Jto make it editable - Double-click the clip and press the Edit (pencil) icon
- RX opens as a standalone app with your sample loaded and ready
- Perform edits (e.g., breath control, de-clicking, etc.)
- Once done, choose File > Overwrite Original File in RX
Your edits are now live inside Ableton, and you’ve avoided:

- Crashed sessions
Bonus Tip: Always Consolidate First
Consolidating ensures RX edits are applied to a clean, new file. This keeps your project organized and non-destructive. Always work on a duplicate.
