Learn how to upgrade your Push 3 from controller to standalone using Ableton’s official Upgrade Kit. A detailed walkthrough from hardware install to final boot into Standalone Mode.

Transform Your Push into a Standalone Powerhouse

Ready to unlock the full potential of your Ableton Push 3? With Ableton’s official Push 3 Upgrade Kit, you can transform your controller version into a fully functional Push 3 Standalone—no soldering, no guesswork, just a well-designed modular upgrade process. In this walkthrough, part of the creator’s online Push 3 course, we’re guided step-by-step through the install from first screw to final boot.

What’s in the Upgrade Kit?

  • Processor with dual Wi-Fi antennas
  • Memory module
  • Battery unit
  • Heat sink
  • All required screws and tools, including screwdrivers and back plate lifter
  • Anti-static mat for a clean working surface

Key Steps in the Process

Prepare Your Workspace

Lay out the anti-static mat and ensure your Push is completely disconnected from power. Carefully unpack all kit components and keep screws organized using the built-in parts tray on the tool box.

Disassemble the Push

Turn over your Push and remove the perimeter screws, followed by the three central ones. Use the included back plate lifter to detach the back panel cleanly and expose the internal hardware bay.

Install the Processor

Insert the processor with silver side up, carefully routing the Wi-Fi antennas around the chassis. Secure it using the provided screws and remove the protective film on top.

Add the Memory

With the Ableton logo facing up, insert the memory module at an angle and push it down until it locks into place with a satisfying click.

Insert the Battery

Position the battery barcode-side up, inserting the rear edge first. Once settled, secure it using the single battery screw to keep it stable.

Reattach the Back Plate

Screw the outer shell back in place—outer screws first, center screws last. Don’t forget the small screws near the feet!

Apply the Heat Sink

Remove its protective labels and snap the heat sink onto the processor via the designed contact points.

Power On and Go Standalone

Once everything is back together, plug in the Push, charge the battery, and power it on. If upgrading from controller mode, you’ll be prompted to switch to Standalone Mode during boot.

Initial setup may take a few minutes, but once it’s done—you’re running Push 3 fully untethered.
