Create clear, balanced, and mix-ready vocals without third-party tools
Tired of hunting down expensive plugins just to get a vocal to sit right in the mix? This guide walks you through a complete vocal processing chain built entirely in Ableton Live using stock devices. Whether you’re producing vocals for electronic tracks, pop, or anything in between, this chain brings polish, clarity, and professional-grade sound—all without leaving the box.
You’ll also find a free downloadable version of the rack linked in the video, so you can drop it directly into your projects and start tweaking instantly.
Step 1: Tuning with Auto Shift
Live doesn’t include advanced vocal pitch correction out of the box—but the Auto Shift plugin offers real-time autotuning that gets the job done. Choose between two mapped presets: Transparent for subtle pitch correction, or Hard Tune for that modern, robotic vocal edge. The mapped Smooth dial lets you fine-tune the effect intensity.
Step 2: Surgical EQ
This stage includes:
- Low Cut: Adjustable filter to remove sub rumble from the vocal.
- Low-Mid Dip: Cuts muddiness (around 250–500Hz).
- Presence Dip: Smooths harshness around 2kHz.
Only the low cut is exposed as a macro dial, making it easy to tweak without overwhelming you with parameters. For deeper EQ tweaks, there’s also a downloadable frequency cheat sheet to help identify vocal trouble spots.
Step 3: De-Essing
The rack includes a DS preset using the Compressor’s EQ sidechain to tame sibilant frequencies. For stronger control, you can swap it out for the Multiband Dynamics’ Split-Band De-Esser.
Step 4: Compression (Glue Style)
With a fast attack, medium release, and a 4:1 ratio, the Glue Compressor here keeps things tight and controlled. The only dial you need is Threshold, with a guide to avoid over-compression (keep gain reduction under -5dB ideally).
Step 5: Brightness with OTT
A lightly applied OTT preset (29% mix) focuses on upward compression in the high end. It brings out breath and shimmer without going brittle.
Step 6: Parallel Compression (Thick Dial)
One of the standout features in this chain. The Thick dial blends in a crushed parallel compression path (20:1 ratio, fast attack) alongside the dry vocal. The result? Extra warmth, richness, and that “radio-ready” vocal feel.
Step 7: Reverb & Echo (Parallel Return Style)
Instead of routing reverb/delay directly onto the vocal, they’re set up in parallel—ensuring the dry vocal retains presence while still benefiting from spatial FX. The chain includes:
- Delay: Set to re-pitch mode for a smooth analog feel.
- Reverb: A soft hall-type preset named “Play Dampen” that adds space without washing everything out.
