Finalist by Tim Exile

Mixing doesn’t have to be a rabbit hole of plugins and parameters. Finalist transforms the mixing and mastering process into something fast, intuitive, and genuinely enjoyable—without the need for credits, subscriptions, or cloud processing.

Built by Tim Exile in Native Instruments Reaktor, Finalist bridges the gap between your instincts and a professional-sounding mix. You know what a great mix sounds like—Finalist gives you the tools to get there yourself, quickly and confidently.

How It Works

Finalist combines audio analysis with a bespoke mixing engine and 50 hand-crafted mix presets. Drop in 2 to 32 audio stems, categorize them (Drums, Bass, Backing, Lead, Aux), and let Finalist analyze their dynamic and frequency profiles.

The system then maps this analysis data onto the mixing engine via presets that control everything from EQ and compression to analog warmth and mastering chains. Unlike AI services, Finalist runs entirely on your machine, giving you real-time feedback and unlimited mixdowns.

50 Mix Presets Across 5 Collections

Essential Collection: Broad range from balanced (Even, Slick, Reach) to hype (Volt, Thump, Roar) and soft (Loaf, Tender, Wash, Grain). Perfect starting points for any genre.

Hype Collection: Hot and loud presets suited for EDM, trap, hip-hop, and hard rock. Includes Savage, Bang, Grunt, Squash, Slam, Halo, Brute, Scorch, Brick, and Hog.

Balance Collection: More measured presets for pop, downtempo, and vocal or melody-led music. Features Tight, Poise, Axis, Open, Crisp, Sheen, Ray, Bare, Glue, and Root.

Soft Collection: Ambient-focused presets including Deep, Galaxy, Float, Buried, Feather, Drift, Haze, Velvet, Wrap, and Ember.

FX Collection: Extreme creative manipulations for experimentation. Includes Chewed, Ripped, Lid, Flip, Null, Oops, Fuzz, Wrong, Skew, and Snip.

The Module System

Finalist’s interface centers around eight modules, each offering simple controls that keep you in creative flow rather than drowning in technical minutiae.

Global Module: Master strength control affecting all other modules. The large knob offsets all module processing strengths simultaneously, with an on/off toggle for instant A/B comparison.

Stem Group Modules (Drums, Bass, Backing, Lead, Aux): Each features a large strength knob controlling processing intensity, plus mute, solo, and gain controls. Lock any module to its current preset while auditioning others—a superpower for creating custom hybrid mixes.

Cleanup Module: Two-stage processing reduces frequency band conflicts between stem groups and applies noise reduction. Particularly effective on material with competing elements or high noise floors.

Master Module: Applies the mastering chain to the summed output. Control strength, tone (bright to warm), and gain. Above +3dB, additional limiters activate for maximum loudness in competitive genres.

Intuitive Workflow Features

Interactive Waveform Display: Color-coded waveforms (blue for drums, yellow for bass, green for backing, pink for lead) let you scrub, loop sections, and solo-scrub individual groups by clicking and dragging.

Module Locks: Found a preset that works perfectly for drums but not the other groups? Lock the drums module and keep browsing presets for the rest. Build custom hybrid mixes effortlessly.

Aux Channel: Enable a fifth stem group when you need more separation—perfect for complex arrangements with multiple lead elements or when vocals need their own dedicated processing.

Stem-Level Adjustments: Fine-tune individual stem gain and pan before reanalysis. Adjust start and end points for precise export control.

5-Second Looping: Double-click any section to create a loop for focused mix tweaking. Move the loop by clicking or dragging the waveform.

Export Options

Finalist offers multiple export methods to suit your workflow.

Offline Render: Use your DAW’s offline bounce function for fastest export. Finalist respects your start and end points automatically.

Live Recording: Route Finalist’s output to an audio track and record in real-time for additional editing possibilities.

Individual Stem Outputs: Finalist outputs each stem group separately (Drums, Bass, Backing, Lead, Aux) as well as the master mix. The individual outputs include the mastering chain effect, meaning they sum perfectly to match the master—technically impossible to achieve in a traditional DAW workflow. Perfect for releasing stem packs that maintain sonic consistency.

Reaktor Tape Module: If using Reaktor standalone, record directly using the built-in tape recorder.

The Philosophy

Finalist isn’t designed to replace mix engineers—it’s built to make mixing accessible when you don’t have the time, budget, or desire to dive into complexity. It’s also a rapid prototyping environment for professionals who want to explore mix variations quickly.

The tool we use shapes how we work. Finalist keeps you mixing with your ears and heart, not your eyes staring at endless plugin interfaces. No LLMs, no cloud processing, no subscriptions—just a tool that respects both your creativity and your autonomy.

The Vibe

Finalist represents nearly three decades of Tim Exile’s journey through music production—the successes, the rabbit holes, the overcomplicated mixes, and the eventual breakthrough into simplicity. Built in Reaktor with UI design by Efflam Le Bivic, it’s a tool that reintroduces carefree intuition to a process that’s become fractally complex.

Whether this is your first mix or you’re seasoned beyond measure, Finalist delivers happy hours of mixing in creative flow state. Fast, fun, and intuitive—exactly as it should be.
