Session Clips by KILLIHU

Overview & Inspiration

Why does moving clips from Session View to Arrangement require so many clicks and so much window switching? Why can’t you see your Session clips while working in Arrangement View?

Session Clips by killihu bridges the gap between Live’s two views with a floating window that displays Session View clips while you work in Arrangement. Drag and drop clips directly onto arrangement tracks, click to insert at the playhead position, or trigger Session clips without leaving Arrangement View—all from a resizable, always-visible interface.

This MaxforLive utility transforms your hybrid workflow, making it effortless to audition Session clips, build arrangements, and integrate improvised Session material into structured compositions without constant view switching.

Features & Highlights

Floating Session View Browser – A dedicated, resizable window displays up to 32 Session clips at once (accessing up to 192 total), automatically showing clips from the selected track or manually chosen tracks.

Dual Insertion Methods – Drag clips directly onto arrangement tracks with visual ghost clip previews (64 bars for MIDI, 60 seconds for audio), or click any clip to insert it at the arrangement playhead position—no dragging required.

Automatic and Manual Modes – Automatic mode displays clips from the currently selected track, following your workflow naturally. Manual mode lets you choose any track, enabling cross-track clip insertion and creative arrangement building.

Intelligent Ghost Clip System – Visual length indicators during drag operations show approximate clip duration using ghost clips (MIDI up to 64 bars, audio up to 60 seconds), though full-length clips of any duration insert correctly.

Session Clip Triggering – Trigger and stop Session View clips directly from the floating window without switching views, perfect for auditioning material while building arrangements.

Auto-Stop Preview Mode – Enable Auto Stop to automatically halt playing clips when dragging to arrangement, ideal for using a track as a preview station before committing clips to the timeline.

Clip Slot Range Selection – Access up to 192 clips per track using six range buttons (1-32, 33-64, 65-96, 97-128, 129-160, 161-192), accommodating extensive Session View libraries.

Always-On-Top Docking – Keep the floating window visible above all other windows, ensuring constant access to your Session clips regardless of which Live view or external application is active.

Keyboard-Mappable Visibility Toggle – Assign a keyboard shortcut to show/hide the floating window instantly, integrating seamlessly into your existing workflow without mouse navigation.

Automatic View Awareness – The floating window appears only in Arrangement View, hiding automatically when switching to Session View and reappearing when you return—intelligent behavior that stays out of your way.

Adjustable Delay Parameter – Fine-tune drag-and-drop timing to match your computer’s performance, reducing delay on faster systems or increasing it on older machines for reliable operation.

How to Use

Drop Session Clips onto any track in your Live set and click the device’s Show/Hide button to open the floating window. The window appears only in Arrangement View, automatically hiding when you switch to Session View.

In Automatic mode, the window displays clips from whichever track you select in Live. In Manual mode, use the track dropdown to choose any track, enabling you to insert clips from one track into another—perfect for building arrangements from multiple Session View sources.

Drag clips directly onto arrangement tracks using the visual ghost clip preview, or simply click a clip to insert it at the current playhead position. The ghost clip system provides visual feedback during dragging (showing up to 64 bars for MIDI, 60 seconds for audio), though clips of any length insert correctly.

Use the Clip Slots selector to access different ranges of clips (1-32, 33-64, up to 161-192), accommodating extensive Session View libraries. Click the Clip Stop button to halt currently playing Session clips without switching views.

Enable Auto Stop mode when using a track for clip preview—dragging any clip will automatically stop playback, creating a seamless audition-to-arrangement workflow. Adjust the Delay parameter if drag-and-drop operations don’t execute smoothly (increase for older computers, decrease for faster systems).

Enable On Top mode to keep the window visible above all other applications, ensuring constant access to your Session clips. Map the Show/Hide button to a keyboard shortcut for instant window toggling without interrupting your creative flow.

Important Information

v1.2 New features and improvements:

– Now a single device is included for Windows and macOS.
– Modified GUI to adapt to the new rack design in Live version 12.2, does not change the operation of the device.

Initial Release – November 2024

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.

.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.

.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
