Turing Machine by Philip Meyer

Turing Machine is a MIDI Tools version of the Music Thing Modular Turing Machine sequencer. Its ingenious design uses a randomness and a 16-bit shift register to generate pitches and rhythmic patterns. What makes the Turing Machine so special is its “big knob” that allows you to control the amount of randomness that is used to generate notes. With the big knob at the center (12 o’clock), the resulting notes will be completely random. Turning the knob left or right reduces the amount of randomness. This makes it great for generating variations on a melody or beat.

This device takes advantage of Ableton Live’s new Scales feature, which means that the generated melodies will remain in key.

TURING MACHINE FEATURES

Scale Aware: Live 12 introduced a new scales feature that allows instruments and MIDI clips to be fixed to a specific scale. Phase Pattern supports this new feature, which makes its algorithmic melodies surprisingly musical.

Theme Support: Full support for Live’s color themes so that the device matches the look and feel of your Live set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Turing Machine requires Ableton Live 12, as it relies on Live 12’s built-in MIDI Tools functionality and the new Scales feature introduced in that version. It will not work with earlier versions of Live.

A shift register is a looping memory circuit that stores and cycles through a sequence of bits, in this case 16 of them. As those bits are read and translated into pitches and rhythms, the result is a repeating but evolvable sequence that feels musical rather than purely random.

At 12 o’clock the sequence is completely random on every step. Turning the knob left or right progressively locks the sequence in, so you can dial from total chaos down to a fixed repeating loop, making it ideal for generating controlled variations on a melody or pattern.

Yes, Turing Machine is scale-aware and integrates with Live 12’s Scales feature, so all generated pitches are constrained to whatever scale you have set in your Live Set. You won’t get out-of-key notes ruining your composition.

Turing Machine is built as a native Live 12 MIDI Tool, not a Max for Live device, so you do not need Max for Live or a separate Max licence to use it.

It excels at generative melody writing, evolving basslines, and creating rhythmic variation without manual programming. It is particularly useful when you want sequences that feel alive and unpredictable but still musically coherent.

Simply drag the device file into your Ableton Live User Library or use Live’s built-in browser to locate and load it onto a MIDI track. From there it will appear as a MIDI Tool within the clip or track you want to sequence.

Important Information

To install MIDI Tools, first double-click to decompress the ZIP archive it arrived in. !

In Live’s Browser, navigate to the User Library in Places

Then find the MIDI Tools folder located there. If you don’t see a folder called MIDI Tools in your User Library, simply create it yourself.

We’d advice adding two subfolders for Generators and Transformers for neatness.

Finally, drag our Generators to the Generators subfolder and our Transformers to the Transformers subfolder

Live should automatically detect them and within the next few minutes, they should appear in the dropdown chooser of Live’s Generators or Transformers in the corresponding tab of any MIDI Clip’s Note Editor.

PLEASE NOTE: Once installed MIDI Tools, since they are not Max MIDI Effects, cannot be dragged and dropped onto MIDI tracks: they can only be loaded by the Generator and Transformer tabs of the MIDI clip editor.
