Craig from Push Patterns walks through the most important settings to change on the Push 3. From battery-saving tips and pad sensitivity to MIDI routing and workflow tweaks—here’s how to get Push feeling exactly how you want it.

Maximize Battery Life, Performance, and Control with These Must-Change Push 3 Settings

Just unboxed your Ableton Push 3 Standalone? Before diving into your next jam session, there are essential settings that need attention. This in-depth guide from Craig at Push Patterns walks through each area of the Settings menu to help you save battery, enhance pad performance, streamline MIDI and audio routing, and take control of your live sets.

Battery Life Boosters

Display Light and LED Brightness

Navigate to the Status tab and reduce both settings. This will significantly extend battery life during untethered sessions.

Turn Off Wi-Fi

If you’re not using Ableton Link or downloading content, disabling Wi-Fi prevents unnecessary battery drain.

Expression and Pad Customization

Enable MPE Mode

Switch from Poly Aftertouch to MPE to unlock pitch bend, slide, and pressure modulation per pad.

  • In-Tune Location: Set to Finger for more accurate note control
  • In-Tune Width: Increase to maximum for wider in-tune zones
  • Slide Height: Adjust to suit your desired modulation range

Pad Sensitivity Settings

For that classic finger-drumming response:

  • Threshold: Low
  • Compand: High
  • Drive: Max
  • Range: Mid-level

This combination delivers an MPC-like feel, ideal for both delicate finger taps and high-velocity performance.

Audio Configuration

  • Sample Rate: Set to 48kHz for higher fidelity recordings
  • Buffer Size:
    • Use 128 for a balance between latency and performance
    • Raise for heavy mixing or lower for recording
  • Phantom Power: Not available—use an external preamp for condenser mics
  • Headphone Routing: Output via 1/2 or 3/4 using a Y-splitter for multiple outputs

MIDI & CV Setup

  • User Port = USB MIDI (Controller Mode)
  • External Port = Rear DIN ports (Standalone Mode)
  • Track, Sync, Remote: Enable as needed for external control
  • Custom MIDI mappings must be done in Live before transferring back to Push
  • CV Ports: Assign as triggers or CV outputs, perfect for modular setups

Workflow and Navigation Settings

  • Workflow Mode: Set to Scene for duplicating full scenes instead of individual clips
  • Turn Off Exclusive Arm and Exclusive Solo: Allows simultaneous recording and soloing across multiple tracks
  • Disable Select on Launch: Keeps your focus on current views when triggering clips, essential during live performance

Resetting Push 3

If you ever need to revert all changes, hold Shift in the Software tab to reveal the option to reset your Push to factory settings.
