Noah Pred constructs a utopian electro jam in Ableton Live using only two MIDI clips, X-Relay, and Pattern Engine. See how modular MIDI routing and real-time randomization generate cohesive, evolving grooves.

Deep Dive with Noah Pred

In this extended live session, producer and educator Noah Pred reveals the immense power of Manifest Audio’s X-Relay and Pattern Engine within a minimalist Ableton Live 12 setup. Starting with just a single drum clip and synth track, he constructs a dynamic, evolving electro groove that embodies a “utopian future” ethos.

Starting from Scratch

The session kicks off by setting BPM to 142 and using the D Hungarian Minor scale. With core kit drums and Live’s Drift synth as the foundation, the focus quickly shifts to Pattern Engine. Noah demonstrates how even basic 16-step sequences can morph into evolving ideas using auto-randomization, chance-based modulation, LFOs, and loop activation features.

MIDI Routing with Purpose

What sets this session apart is Noah’s use of X-Relay—not just as a utility, but as a compositional tool. He leverages it to extract MIDI from specific sources and route them creatively across the set, triggering pads, chords, and transpositions without cluttering the session with excessive MIDI tracks.

Generative Systems, Designed with Intention

Rather than letting randomness dictate the result, Noah carefully captures the best patterns from Pattern Engine and uses X-Relay to create meaningful interplay. Transposition tracks shift melodies subtly, adding harmonic movement, while gate-based relays create reactive layers with claps, rimshots, and percussive accents.

Layers of Atmosphere and Intent

Throughout the jam, elements like Meld and Wavetable are used for pads and leads, fed MIDI by relayed notes, creating ambient textures and shimmering melodies. Pads are modulated, synced, and transposed in real-time, maintaining harmonic cohesion with Live’s Scale Mode.

Final Thoughts

This session exemplifies modular thinking in a DAW environment. By harnessing X-Relay and Pattern Engine, Noah Pred builds a living, breathing track where every part is connected, reactive, and generative. The result is an engaging hybrid of structured composition and spontaneous improvisation.
