Mutable Instruments’ legendary Plaits lives on in Max for Live. Explore 16 synth engines and deep modulation with P4L—an open-source powerhouse for adventurous sound design.

Explore 16 Synth Engines and Deep Modulation with P4L in Ableton

Mutable Instruments may have shut its doors, but their open-source spirit lives on—most notably in Plaits for Life (P4L), a Max for Live version of the iconic Plaits Eurorack module. Built and extended by Rico, P4L takes the original’s raw synthesis power and folds it into a powerful, polyphonic M4L instrument that’s ripe for experimentation and deep sound design.

Mutable Inspiration, Max for Live Execution

P4L brings all 16 Plaits synth engines into the box, accessible directly inside Ableton. Unlike the original monophonic module, P4L features seven voices of polyphony and even Unison modes—making it a more flexible tool for composing, layering, and live performance.

Rico didn’t just port the module; he enhanced it with an intuitive modulation matrix, additional voice control, and an external Max patch that displays contextual parameters for each engine—a lifesaver given how differently each model behaves.

Quick Installation Tips

For everything to work seamlessly, place the P4L device inside your User Library under:
Presets/Instruments/Max Instrument/P4L
This keeps folder structures intact for proper preset recall. It’s recommended to use the latest version (1.1) and keep the accompanying support files together, especially if you’re using the companion cheat sheet or Max companion device.

Inside the Interface: What Makes P4L Tick

Each patch includes:

  • 16 Synth Engines: From virtual analog to formant and granular synthesis
  • Macro Parameters: ‘Timbre’, ‘Morph’, and ‘Harmonics’ control different aspects depending on the engine
  • Mod Matrix: Intuitive drag-and-drop patching of modulation sources to destinations, including envelopes, LFOs, velocity, and more
  • Dual LFOs & Random Sources: Built-in complex modulation
  • Unison & Polyphony Controls: Easily switch between mono, poly, or stacked unison voices

P4L’s strength lies in its flexible modulation system—every engine can be shaped into something distinct, with routing for velocity, aftertouch, random, audio-rate signals, and sample & hold behavior.

Bonus: Max Companion Patch and Preset Collection

To ease the learning curve, Side Brain built a separate Max for Live companion that dynamically displays what each macro knob controls per engine. If you’re overwhelmed trying to remember what “Morph” does in “Granular Formant,” this will save you time and guesswork.

The project also comes with:

  • Presets for each of the 16 engines
  • A dedicated rack with curated effects from Eon
  • An Ableton project showcasing what’s possible
