LayerLab by YRAKI

WHAT IF EVERY SAMPLE WAS UTTERLY UNIQUE?

LayerLab is a MaxforLive stochastic sample layering instrument for producers who demand originality. Load a folder of samples, trigger a note, and generate entirely new one-shots through intelligent randomization and layering.

Built by YRAKI (Mariano Sibilia)—the London-based producer behind releases on inklingroom and Early Reflex—LayerLab embodies his approach to computational complexity and organic sound design. Every sound is unique, layered, and impossible to replicate.

Inside you’ll find:

  • 4 independent sample layers with stochastic selection and playback
  • Repitch and Timestretch modes for flexible sound manipulation
  • Randomization matrix with deviation control for controlled chaos
  • LP/HP filtering, phase inversion, and playback direction control per layer
  • Solo and individual volume controls for precise layering
  • Visual waveform feedback for each layer
  • Drag-and-drop workflow—load any folder of samples instantly
  • Perfect for IDM, post-club, hyperpop, jungle, experimental electronica, and beyond

Transform forgotten samples into new sonic weapons. Record everything—LayerLab doesn’t store presets, it creates moments.

Very fun to use when you are messing around for ideas. Moreover when you have tons of samples and you are not a sample hugger. Must be an interesting tool to use with Kentaro's clip exporter.

LayerLab by YRAKI

Overview & Inspiration

What if every kick, snare, or texture in your project was utterly unique—born from chance, shaped by your hands, and impossible to replicate?

LayerLab is a MaxforLive instrument designed for producers who refuse to settle for stock samples. Built by YRAKI (Mariano Sibilia), this stochastic sample layering module transforms folders of forgotten sounds into entirely new one-shots. Load any collection of samples, trigger a MIDI note, and watch as four independent layers unfold in unpredictable, generative ways.

This isn’t a preset bank. It’s a creative engine for producers making post-club beats, experimental electronica, IDM, hyperpop, jungle, and beyond—anyone who wants their drums and textures to feel alive, layered, and full of character.

Features & Highlights

4-Layer Stochastic Layering – Each of the four independent slots can load a different sample from your folder, with controls over sample selection, start time, playback latency, speed, panning, and balance (volume relative to other layers). Every trigger creates a fresh combination.

Flexible Playback Modes – Choose between Repitch mode (where speed affects pitch, tape-style) or Timestretch mode (where duration changes while pitch stays locked). You can also reverse playback direction for instant textural shifts.

XTRA Window for Deep Control – Fine-tune each layer with lowpass and highpass filters, adjust time-stretching quality and formant shifts, and toggle phase inversion for L/R channels. These hidden parameters unlock entirely new sonic dimensions.

Randomization Matrix – Feeling stuck? Hit the RND button to randomize selected parameters across all layers. Control the deviation amount (0-100%) to dial in chaos or subtle variation. You can also reset individual parameters to their default state.

Solo & Volume Control – Isolate any layer to audition it in context, or adjust individual and master volume levels for precise gain staging.

Visual Feedback – Each layer displays its waveform and playback position, giving you immediate visual confirmation of what’s happening under the hood.

Drag-and-Drop Workflow – Simply drag a folder of samples into LayerLab or use the browse function. The device can handle folders with hundreds of samples (visual limit of 100 dots for performance).

How to Use

LayerLab integrates seamlessly into any Ableton Live MIDI track. Drag the device onto an empty track, click OPEN to reveal the interface, then load a folder of samples—kicks, snares, field recordings, vocal chops, synth hits, anything.

Adjust the sliders to control sample selection, timing, speed, and spatial placement. Dive into the XTRA section to sculpt tone with filters and time-stretching. Use the randomization matrix to explore unexpected combinations, then record the output as audio.

Important: LayerLab does not store presets. Think of it as a generative one-shot factory—capture what you love by recording audio, then move on to the next creation.

Ideal For

  • Experimental producers crafting IDM, glitch, hyperpop, and avant-garde electronica
  • Post-club and leftfield bass artists who want sounds that feel organic and unpredictable
  • Drum designers building custom kits from repurposed and layered samples
  • Sound designers working in film, games, or installations who need generative textures
  • Anyone tired of generic sample packs who wants every sound to be one-of-a-kind

Important Information

Initial Release: March 2024

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.

.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.

.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
