This section of unique Drum Rack™ tools will give you instant wonky and glitchy drums.
Create off the grid patterns that will transform your tracks into unmistakable productions.
Learn how to manipulate your drum sounds and patterns using state of the art effects, processing and deep mapping for the ultimate control and performance tools. All this using Ableton Live native plug-ins, synths and samplers.
Creating unmistakable and quirky drums is a science within itself. Adding some spice to your tracks is exactly why we created the Super Modular Drum Machine.
This third Elements release not only contains unique analogue drum and percussion samples from our Modular Synth, but also three exclusive 36db Drum Rack Kits, each with a unique flavour for creating glitchy drums and patterns. The 36db Glitchtastic Rack will send your ideas to new realms of sonic goodness we know you’ll find essential!
The 36db Super Modular Drum Machine is made up of four 36db custom Drum Racks™.
This kit has macros dedicated to glitching out your drum kit and patterns. Some of the sounds from the kit are routed to specific effects within the Drum Rack. This allows for glitchy feeds of delay and timing for the sounds on these pads.
We also have the 36db That Repeater Thang. This has 10 snapshot presets for you to explore. It’s connected to the Stutter macro in the Drum Rack and this, in combination with the Glitch Delay amount macro, gives you cool warped and glitchy effects.
You can also select different snapshot presets for the 36db That Repeater Thang rack on your MIDI keyboard from C0 to A0.
Make sure you arm the selected MIDI track to enable this feature. You’ll also need to enable the MIDI in remote function in preferences for your Master MIDI keyboard to activate this feature.
This kit is designed to give you irregular timings and mishap grooves for added wonkiness. The bottom 8 macros are connected to our 36db MIDI Noter Offset Max for Live device. This adds delay times to the notes. Each drum pad also contains a groove swing amount. This adds feel and swing to each of the drum pads, giving out-of-sync time vibes to the drum patterns.
You need to select each pattern from the master scene as they’re tempo dependent to work correctly with the snapshot preset.
So, select pattern 1 snapshot preset and then play the scene for pattern 1. Use the same process for all the kits and patterns. Everything is named the same to make it easier to select the correct combination for the kits and patterns.
This channel also features the 36db Glitchtastic Device Rack. This is a selection of different effects that can be turned on and off by using your MIDI keyboard, using the white notes from C3 to E4. This can help with performing live jams with your drum patterns. Within the drum patterns under the envelope tab, you can see we’ve added automation to turn different effects on and off within the pattern, to add glitchy moments on the groove.
This is easy to do with the pencil tool, or you can record the notes into the MIDI pattern live. Once this is done you can delete the notes, then use the envelope tab in the clip editor for editing your jammed effects automation.
This second Drift & Swing Kit 2 is a more complex beast. This time we’ve embedded the Glitchtastic effect within the architecture of the kit’s effects, sending a selection of drum pads to different effects. This way, it only glitches out some of the drum sounds, adding ghost trail effects to spice things up. The Glitch Delay is also used within this kit.
The first two macros control the quantity of effects within the kit. The blue Glitch offset determines what group of effects are being used. This is subtle but you will hear the changes.
The green Warp and red LFO Offset macros control the Glitchtastic effect that is on the end of the channel strip. This will affect the entire kit. Playing around with all these macros will give you absorbing and unpredictable glitching effects.
Again, selecting the right snapshot preset and pattern will give you the correct timing. Trying out some of the other presets will also give you some interesting results. The scenes are locked to a tempo for each of the patterns.
The third and final kit is another approach to creating complex patterns and drum grooves. This time, the 16 macros can select different drum and percussive sounds for each pad. You’ll see that each of the 16 pads have multiple sounds. By using the snapshot presets you can select different combinations of sounds to create a variety of kit. This is mapped to your MIDI Keyboard on all keys from C5 to G6, and can be recorded within your MIDI pattern clip to switch the selection of drum sounds.
The single orange macro at the front of the Drum Rack “Warp & Stutter” will control the Warp & Stutter Glitch Effects Rack. This Is a combination of the Glitchtastic effect, and That Repeater Thang. The Glitchtastic effect selection is controlled by an LFO within the effects rack which will briefly and randomly change the type of effects. The Glitchtastic effect will arm If you turn the “Warp & Stutter” macro to 33. If you then turn it past 64, it will also arm the 36db That Repeater Thang Rack in series. Try changing the snapshot presets within the effect for different types of repeats.
