I have to explore it further, but the potential here is amazing!

So far in my inital uses, I wasn't able to get to its potential as I'd hope for as seen in the demo video. The audio effect feels more of a reverb than a delay. Nevertheless, I am to explore it further to find the best settings for my needs. I'll try it with one shots or other instruments instead of percussion

Petal by Rainbow Circuit

Petal is a Max for Live multi-tap delay that draws any sound into an ever-unfolding garden. The core of Petal is its eight-tap delay, evenly spaced at the dialed in delay time. Individual taps can be toggled on or off to create irregular rhythmic delays.

The X-Y Shaping pad distorts the tap delay times in interesting ways. The Y-axis shifts the tap delay times from equidistant (linear) spacing to skewed (sigmoid) spacing. The X-axis skews the tap delay times closer to either tap 1 or tap 8.

Each tap can be pitch-shifted up or down in perfect 5ths or octaves. Play a handful of notes and listen as it evolves into a rich harmonic background. The FFT pitch-shifting circuit provides clean pitch-shifting with minimal tonal coloration.

Feeling uninspired? Tap the dice to generate endless pitch-shifting and tap on/off combinations.

Add feedback and hear the delay pattern dance around. Petal uses a separate delay line in its feedback circuit, which can be set to individual tap length.

Introducing character to Petal is easy: a no-nonsense filter for effortless tonal shaping, delay time modulation using the Wobble parameter, and soft clipping to add rich harmonics to the input signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Petal is a Max for Live device, so you’ll need Ableton Live Suite or a copy of Live Standard with a Max for Live licence. Make sure your Max for Live installation is up to date for the best performance.

Petal spaces eight delay taps evenly across your chosen delay time, and you can toggle individual taps on or off to build irregular, rhythmic echo patterns. The X-Y Shaping pad then lets you warp the spacing of those taps from perfectly linear to a sigmoid curve, giving you anything from tight rhythmic repeats to sprawling, evolving textures.

Each of the eight taps can be pitch-shifted up or down in perfect 5ths or octaves, which lets simple melodic input bloom into rich harmonic layers over time. The pitch-shifting uses an FFT circuit specifically designed to keep things clean and transparent with minimal tonal colouration.

It does both well. With all taps evenly spaced and pitch-shifting disabled, it behaves like a conventional multi-tap delay. Push the X-Y pad and bring in the pitch-shifting and it becomes a full-on texture and atmosphere generator.

Hitting the dice button generates random pitch-shifting configurations across the taps, which is ideal when you’re stuck for inspiration or just want to explore harmonic combinations you wouldn’t have dialled in yourself.

Absolutely. The tap toggles, X-Y pad, and randomise function are all hands-on controls that respond well to live manipulation, making it a strong choice for real-time performance alongside studio sound design work.

Simply drag the Max for Live device file into your Ableton Live User Library or place it in your designated Max for Live devices folder, then drag it onto any audio or MIDI track from within Live’s browser.

Important Information

V1.0.0 – Initial Release – December 2023

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.

.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.

.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
