Must have if you are into bell sounds and other physical modeling synths. This feels like a hybrid of Collision, Corpus, Tension and Granulator. For more interesting sounds, automate the bands

Whistle Two by Rainbow Circuit

Whistle 2 is a physical modelling synthesizer with a banded waveguide as a resonator, disturbed with a granulated noise exciter source.

Banded waveguide synthesis is a physical modeling synthesis method that can be used to model elastic solids, like a vibraphone or a marimba. The synthesis method propagates exciter disturbances across tuned frequency bands. In whistle the amplitude and the partials of these frequency bands can be dialed in and automated.

The exciter of Whistle uses a granular engine to process the noise source. This design creates a uniquely unpredictable texture, with any tonal elements in the exciter source interacting with the resonator to create random harmonic content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Banded waveguide synthesis is a physical modelling technique designed to replicate the behaviour of elastic solid instruments like vibraphones, marimbas, and similar resonant bodies. It works by propagating exciter disturbances across tuned frequency bands, giving you organic, acoustically-inspired tones that are difficult to achieve with standard subtractive or wavetable synthesis.

The exciter source in Whistle 2 is driven by a granular noise engine rather than a simple impulse or bow model, which introduces an unpredictable, evolving texture. This means tonal elements within the exciter interact with the resonator in ways that generate random harmonic content, producing results that shift and surprise even with static settings.

Whistle 2 excels at mallet-style percussion textures, metallic tones, glassy pads, and abstract resonant noise. Because of the granular exciter’s unpredictability, it also works well for experimental sound design, generative textures, and anything that benefits from organic movement and harmonic randomness.

Yes, the amplitude and partials of the frequency bands can be dialled in and automated directly within Ableton Live, giving you full control over how the resonator evolves over time within your arrangement or performance.

Whistle 2 is a Max for Live device and requires Ableton Live Suite or a copy of Ableton Live Standard with a Max for Live licence, along with Max 8 or later. Always check that your version of Ableton Live is up to date before installing.

After purchase you will receive a download containing the Max for Live device file. Simply drag it into your Ableton Live User Library or directly onto a MIDI track, and it is ready to use with no additional setup required.

Whistle 2 is accessible enough for producers who are new to physical modelling, since the core parameters are straightforward to explore, but it rewards deeper experimentation for those who want to push into more complex sound design territory. If you are comfortable working with Max for Live instruments, you will feel at home straight away.

Important Information

V1.0.0 – Initial Release – March 2023

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.

.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.

.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
