X-FX by Manifest Audio

What if you could tune your effects to any scale and key - and even play them via MIDI input in real-time?

What if you could tune your effects to any scale and key – and even play them via MIDI input in real-time?

Designed by Ableton Certified Trainer Noah Pred to enhance harmonic coherence and provide new approaches to signal processing while enabling interactions between otherwise unrelated musical elements, X-FX is comprised of nine unique Max for Live audio effects.

In addition to standard timing controls, each effect can be controlled melodically with a MIDI note dial or played via MIDI input with the included X-Relay. Better yet, when played in a harmonic mode, all X-FX can be constrained within 69 scales in any key, selected locally within the device or by default via the bundled Global Hub utility.

Tuned comb filtration, frequency modulation, delay, bit reduction, resonant filtration, and harmonization are all within your grasp, while time-based effects such as X-Delay and X-Reverb can be controlled with a highly-flexible base rate and multiplier combination, allowing for new levels of rhythmic precision and alignment. Extreme feedback and unruly distortion can be safely explored with optional output limiting on all devices.

Utility effects X-Connect and X-Divide open new routing possibilities, while X-FM can harness any audio input in your Live set as an FM source. Flexible parameter modulation is provided by the included Mod Squad bundle, with over seventy presets and racks showcasing how they can work together with the included X-FX.

X-FX: UNIQUE FEATURES

The input threshold control on all X-FX allows you to apply effects only to signal above (or, optionally, below) a specified amplitude. Only want to delay, reverberate, or tame signal above certain peaks? This is the parameter to explore. Switch to crossover mode to only apply effects when signal is above (or, optionally, below) a specified frequency. Ultimate flexibility for enhanced creativity.

All X-FX can be constrained to one of 69 scales in any key. By default, this will be set by Live 12’s scale and key, or with Live 11 and older, an instance of the included Global Hub utility – but can also be pinned locally on a per-device basis, allowing you to explore diatonic musical expressions of previously chromatic effects.

In addition to standard dry/wet balance, the unique interpolate mode works in tandem with the input threshold to only trigger the current wet effect amount when signal exceeds the specified threshold or crossover, resulting in truly dynamic processing.

First, place the included X-Relay utility on any MIDI source track, switch it to Relay mode, and select a conduit. Then set your target X-FX to Relay mode and set it to receive on the same conduit. Voila! Now you can play your effect via MIDI, within the selected scale and key, and with optional transposition. Better yet, you can flip the incoming Relay signal to invert the notes on the keyboard for instant counterpoint. Or, set a delay on the source X-Relay instance to induce call and response. The possibilities are truly endless.

Every device has input and output gain controls with a wide range to boost or attenuate as needed to keep your signal at optimal levels regardless of effect processing.

As described above, X-FX fits neatly with our Global Hub and X-Relay utilities as well as Live 12’s scale awareness, creating an integrated musical ecosystem that expands the possible to new realms.

All X-FX have built-in output limiting enabled by default so you can experiment with extreme feedback and other settings without concern for damage.

X-FX are designed to integrate with Mod Squad, our custom collection of advanced modulation devices — LFOs, Envelopes, Trackers, Randomizers all come included with the bundled Mod Squad Free, and over 70 presets demonstrate how they work together, hand to glove. Better yet, it also comes bundled with Utility Boost: a set of five workflow-enhancing devices that help coordinate the scale and key of X-FX, flexibly route MIDI into X-FX, and much more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Designed by Ableton Certified Trainer Noah Pred, Utility Boost now contains eight workflow enhancement devices:

  • Global Hub to control or randomize Scale, Key, and other crucial parameters for multiple Manifest Audio devices throughout a set simultaneously.
  • Mix Scoper to compare your output signal to a pink noise curve – with or without audible pink noise.
  • Note Scoper to reveal MIDI pitch and velocity data in real-time.
  • Note Trigger to trigger MIDI notes via MIDI CC, automation, or modulation rather than standard note input.
  • Sound Scoper to inspect audio waveform or sonogram with amplitude, and root note frequency in real-time.
  • Time Zone to responsively calculate any rhythmic value in milliseconds, hertz, or, where applicable, MIDI note pitches.
  • Track Notes to easily add text notes to any track, automatically stored with your Live set.
  • X-Relay to dynamically receive, transmit, and control MIDI anywhere in a set in a variety of creative ways.

Inject life into your sets and compositions with this set of fifteen modulators designed to create intricate, dynamic relationships between otherwise separate elements, add dub-style effects at random intervals, powerful LFO control, quantized macros, and audio-rate modulation… free!

Designed by Ableton Certified Trainer Noah Pred, Mod Squad includes:

7 x Max MIDI Effects – all mappable to up to eight parameter targets

  • MIDI ADSRx – probabilistically trigger optionally BPM-synchronized ADSR envelopes with numerous advanced modes
  • MIDI Autodubber – probabilistically generate maximum value spikes with note triggers at specified intervals within specified ranges for designated periods while otherwise residing at a minimum value
  • MIDI Cycler – step through incremental values with MIDI note triggers with customizable step count, slope mode, direction, and more.
  • MIDI Key Tracker – probabilistically generate modulation values from incoming MIDI note pitch, velocity, velocity with gate returning to minimum, or gate only, with optional intervals and delay
  • MIDI LFOx – probabilistically generate advanced, flexibly synchronized LFO curves with optional cycle reset triggered via incoming MIDI or specified in bars, along with audio-rate MIDI pitch-controlled LFO rate option constrainable to Global Hub key and scale, with depth optionally controlled by pitch or velocity
  • MIDI S&H – probabilistically generate random values with note on or off triggers at optionally specified intervals
  • MIDI X-Control – a macro knob optionally quantized to incoming MIDI note on or note off messages within constrainable ranges

10 x Max Audio Effects – all mappable to up to eight parameter targets

  • X-Control – a macro knob optionally quantized to a variety of synchronized rates for ladder-style parameter changes

Included Audio Effect Racks

  • X-Control 8 – control up to 64 parameters anywhere in your set, including on the Master track, via eight rack macros, each mapped to eight corresponding unmapped X-Control instances.
  • X-Control 4 – control up to 32 parameters anywhere in your set, including on the Master track, via four rack macros, each mapped to four corresponding unmapped X-Control instances, with the other four rack macros assigned to Rate, Multiplier, Jitter, and Smoothing for all four X-Controls contained within.

All Max devices are optimized for Push with full Info View annotations – just start mapping parameters and let the magic unfold.
