EIGHT BRAINS, INFINITE POSSIBILITIES – BIOMIMICRY MEETS GENERATIVE SEQUENCING

TRIPLE PACK SAVINGS: Add any three or more Manifest Audio products to your cart and save 20% automatically at checkout!

Nature’s most intelligent invertebrate inspired the most intelligent sequencer. Octopulse by Ableton Certified Trainer Noah Pred is a generative MaxforLive MIDI effect that mimics the octopus’s distributed neural system—eight independent pulse generators working in harmony, each with its own brain, yet controllable as a unified whole.

Each pulse arm generates MIDI notes on its own polyrhythmic clock with optional Euclidean patterns up to 64 steps. All notes are quantized to your selected scale and key with Live 12 scale awareness. Randomize everything with global dice or lock specific parameters to keep them steady. Enable transposition mode to play your keyboard and control all pulses interactively in real-time.

Inside you’ll find:

  • 8 independent pulse generators with individual timing, notes, velocity, and octave controls
  • Euclidean pattern generation up to 64 steps per pulse with inversion and direction controls
  • Live 12 scale awareness with 69 scales in any key—quantizes all output automatically
  • Interactive transposition via incoming MIDI for live performance and keyboard control
  • Global randomization with lock controls to exempt specific parameters
  • 4 playback modes: Free, Gate, Side, and Arp for different performance scenarios
  • Advanced per-pulse settings: multiplier modes, cycle resets, offsets, and 5 lock types
  • X-Relay integration to route each pulse to any of 64 destinations in your set
  • Global swing control with 32n, 16n, and 8n options
  • Polyphonic or monophonic output modes with legato option
  • Notes or Drums mode for melodic or percussive programming
  • Multiple included presets for instant inspiration

Perfect for electronic music producers, live performers, and anyone exploring polyrhythmic sequencing, Euclidean patterns, algorithmic composition, or generative systems. Nine brains, infinite musical possibilities.

Requires Ableton Live Suite 12.1.x or higher with MaxforLive 9.0.x or higher (Live 11 compatible).

Octopulse V2 by Manifest Audio

Overview & Inspiration

Nine brains, infinite possibilities. The octopus—one of nature’s most intelligent creatures—doesn’t rely on a single brain. Instead, it distributes neural processing across nine interconnected brains: one central brain coordinating eight arm-based brains, each capable of independent decision-making while contributing to a unified whole.

Octopulse brings this biological marvel into your music production. Created by Ableton Certified Trainer Noah Pred, this generative MaxforLive MIDI effect combines eight individually controllable pulse generators with global controls that let you manipulate them in unison while each retains distinct characteristics, directions, and behaviors.

Whether you’re generating complex polyrhythmic drum patterns, evolving melodic sequences, or experimental soundscapes, Octopulse gives you the tools to create music that’s simultaneously structured and organic—just like its cephalopod namesake.

Features & Highlights

Eight Independent Pulse Generators – Each of the eight pulse “arms” operates on its own clock, defined by a polyrhythmic base musical rate with divisor and multiplier controls. Set each pulse to a specific MIDI note, octave, and velocity with individual randomization probability for endless variation.

Euclidean Pattern Generation – Each pulse can trigger optional Euclidean patterns of up to 64 steps with unique inversion and direction controls. Create mathematically perfect rhythmic patterns that feel organic and musical, with per-pulse or global control over fills, shifts, and directions.

Scale-Aware Quantization – All outgoing MIDI notes are automatically quantized to your selected scale and key, with full Live 12 scale awareness support. Choose from 69 scales in any key, and switch between global or local scale settings to suit your workflow.

Interactive Transposition – Enable transposition mode to control all pulses via incoming MIDI clips or real-time keyboard input for uniquely interactive musical results. Works in polyphonic or monophonic modes, with additive transposition available for automation on top.

Global Randomization with Lock Control – Click the global dice to instantly randomize note values, base rates, divisors, and multipliers within constrainable ranges. Lock individual parameters to exempt them from global randomization—perfect for keeping certain elements steady while others evolve.

Four Playback Modes – Choose Free for continuous playback, Gate to trigger only when MIDI notes are held, Side to play only between incoming notes, or Arp mode for retriggering arpeggiator behavior that restarts patterns with each note input.

Advanced Per-Pulse Control – Toggle into advanced mode to access per-pulse multiplier modes (all, odd, or even integers), individual cycle reset intervals in bars, per-pulse offsets with millisecond precision, and five lock types (Reset, Play, Time, Note, Velocity) for surgical control over what randomizes and what doesn’t.

X-Relay Integration – Route each pulse to any of 64 destinations anywhere in your Live set using the included X-Relay utility from Utility Boost. Perfect for sending different pulses to different instruments, effects chains, or even separate tracks.

Global Swing & Timing Control – Add global swing at 32n, 16n, or 8n intervals, with the option to sync to Live’s global groove pool. Control velocity, duration, and multiplier for all pulses simultaneously, plus global octave randomization and hold probability for acidic monophonic glides.

Activation Inversion – Quickly flip which pulses are active with global activation inversion, creating instant alternate pattern variations. Gradually build up rhythms by activating pulses one by one, or activate/deactivate all simultaneously.

Polymetric Reset Control – Set a reset interval in bars to constrain endlessly sprawling polymetric playback into more predictable, cyclical patterns. Or set it to zero for infinite evolution. Individual per-pulse reset intervals in advanced mode enable multi-layered rhythms with different cycle lengths.

Notes or Drums Mode – Toggle between Notes for chromatic melodic programming or Drums for instant percussive programming starting from the key range of most Drum Racks (C1 upward).

How to Use

Place Octopulse on any MIDI track before your instrument. Unlike Subtraction Engine, Octopulse generates MIDI notes on its own—no input required in Free mode.

Start by activating individual pulse arms and setting their notes, rates, and multipliers. Click the global dice to randomize everything for instant starting points, or manually program each pulse for precise control. Enable Euclidean mode for individual pulses or all at once to create mathematically perfect rhythmic patterns.

Adjust global controls like velocity, octave randomization, and swing to affect all pulses simultaneously. Lock specific parameters to keep them stable while randomizing others. Use advanced mode to set per-pulse offsets, cycle reset intervals, and X-Relay destinations for maximum routing flexibility.

Toggle between polyphonic and monophonic output modes depending on your instrument. Enable transposition mode and play your keyboard to interactively control all pulses in real-time—perfect for live performance.

Experiment with the four playback modes: use Free for continuous generation, Gate for keyboard-controlled triggering, Side for negative space between notes, or Arp for retriggering arpeggiator behavior.

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.

.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.

.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
