Music is dialogue. The most compelling compositions succeed because voices respond to each other—one calls, another answers, ideas build through exchange. Conversation Engine by Ableton Certified Trainer Noah Pred brings this fundamental principle into generative territory, creating intelligent call-and-response between two independent musical voices that truly converse with each other.
Each voice has its own pitch, velocity, length, and density, plus pitch and velocity deviation for human-like expression. Assign which voice plays on each of up to 64 steps with color-coded toggles, then use global or per-step probability controls to determine which assignments might flip during randomization. Lock crucial phrase anchors at 0% probability while letting surrounding steps evolve—or enable Auto Dice mode to automatically regenerate the conversation at specified intervals for infinitely evolving musical dialogues.
Inside you’ll find:
- Real-time call-and-response generation between two independent musical voices
- Per-voice controls for pitch, velocity, length, density, hold, pause, and sustain
- Pitch and velocity deviation options for expressive, human-like variation
- Up to 64-step sequence with color-coded voice assignment per step
- Global and per-step probability controls with Auto Dice interval randomization
- Lock and override modes for structured or free randomization
- Euclidean and Count pattern generation for rhythmic complexity
- Weighted randomization to bias conversation toward either voice
- Scale and key awareness with optional Drums mode for percussion
- X-Relay routing to send each voice to any of 64 destinations in your set
- Solo and Blend output modes—conversation only or layered with incoming MIDI
- Global swing integration and transposition controls
- Full Info View annotations and comprehensive manual
Perfect for electronic music producers, beat makers, composers exploring counterpoint, live performers, and anyone who wants to transform static sequences into living, breathing musical exchanges. Two voices, infinite conversations.
Requires Ableton Live Suite 12.1.x or higher (or Live Standard with MaxforLive) with MaxforLive 9.0.x or higher.

Conversation Engine by Manifest Audio
Overview & Inspiration
Music is conversation. The most compelling compositions throughout history—from Bach’s fugues to Miles Davis’s improvisations—succeed because they create dialogue. One voice calls, another responds. Ideas build on each other. Tension and resolution emerge from the interplay.
Conversation Engine by Ableton Certified Trainer Noah Pred brings this fundamental musical principle into generative territory. This MaxforLive MIDI effect creates intelligent call-and-response between two independent musical voices. The result isn’t just two separate sequences running in parallel—it’s a genuine musical dialogue where each voice responds to the other.
Whether you’re crafting intricate melodic counterpoint, building dynamic drum patterns with conversing hi-hats and kicks, or exploring experimental soundscapes where textures trade phrases, Conversation Engine transforms static sequences into living, breathing musical exchanges.
Features & Highlights
Dual-Voice Architecture – Two completely independent voices, each with its own pitch, velocity, length, and density controls. Assign different notes to each voice and watch them trade phrases across up to 64 steps. Perfect for melodic call-and-response, conversational drum patterns, or complex harmonic interplay.
Per-Voice Character Controls – Give each voice its own personality through individual pitch and velocity deviation, hold sustain, pause settings, and density controls. Voice 1 might be bold and assertive with high velocity and tight phrasing, while Voice 2 responds with softer, more sustained notes and sparse density. The deviation options bring human-like variation to each voice’s expression.
Step-by-Step Voice Assignment – The 64-step grid lets you assign which voice plays on each step. Color-coded toggles make it instantly clear which voice is speaking when. Set individual probability sliders per step to control how likely each assignment is to flip during randomization—or lock steps at 0% probability to keep certain phrase patterns fixed while others evolve.
Global and Per-Step Probability Control – The Global Randomization Amount slider controls the likelihood of voice assignments flipping across all unlocked steps simultaneously. But you can also set individual step probabilities for surgical control over which parts of the conversation remain stable and which parts evolve. Lock crucial phrase anchors while letting surrounding steps randomize for dynamic variation.
Auto Dice Interval Randomization – Enable Auto Dice mode to automatically regenerate voice assignments at specified intervals measured in bars. Create infinitely evolving musical dialogues where the conversation shifts every 2, 4, or 8 bars—with locked steps permanently exempt. Perfect for live performance or long-form generative compositions that never repeat the same way twice.
Euclidean Pattern Generation – Generate mathematically perfect conversational patterns using Euclidean sequencing. Set the number of steps, fills, shifts, inversions, and directions to create compelling starting points. Then randomize from there—or reset back to your Euclidean foundation whenever you want to return to the original phrase structure.
Count-Based Programming – Use Count mode to quickly enable a specific number of steps, reset that count at separate intervals, shift the pattern forward or backward, and invert the voice assignments. This provides an alternative approach to Euclidean patterns for structured call-and-response programming.
Weighted Randomization Modes – Choose between Random mode (where percentages determine likelihood of any change) or Weighted mode (where higher probability values bias steps toward Voice 1, and lower values bias toward Voice 2). This gives you directional control over how randomization affects the conversational balance between voices.
Scale and Key Awareness – Full Live 12 scale awareness with 69 scales in any key means all output is automatically quantized to your selected scale. Switch between global mode to inherit Live’s scale settings or pin locally to set discrete scale and key within the device. Optional Drums mode automatically sets chromatic scale for percussive programming.
X-Relay Routing Integration – Route each voice to any of 64 destinations anywhere in your Live set using the included X-Relay utility from Utility Boost. Send Voice 1 to a piano while Voice 2 goes to a synth pad, or route different voices to completely different effects chains for maximum sonic differentiation.
Solo and Blend Output Modes – Toggle Solo mode to output only the generated conversation, or switch to Blend mode to allow incoming MIDI to pass through alongside the generated voices. Perfect for layering the conversation with held chords or bass notes, or for using the device as a controllable arpeggiator that responds to your playing.
Global Transposition and Swing – Transpose both voices together in octaves and semitones for quick key changes. Add global swing at multiple intervals with integration to Live’s global groove pool. Control both voice densities and holds simultaneously with global sliders while retaining the ability to fine-tune each voice individually.
Secure and Override Modes – In Secure mode, locked steps (set to 0% probability) remain untouched during global randomization. Switch to Override mode to force all steps—even locked ones—to respond to the Global Randomization Amount slider for more dramatic transformations.
Visual Playhead and Lock Controls – Always know where you are in the 64-step cycle with the real-time playhead indicator. Separate toggle controls for locked and unlocked steps let you quickly flip all locked steps, all unlocked steps, or invert their current assignments independently.
How to Use
Place Conversation Engine on any MIDI track before your instrument. It generates MIDI notes on its own in Free mode—no input required.
Start by setting the pitch, velocity, length, and density for each of your two voices. Click individual step toggles to assign which voice plays on each step—the color-coded interface makes the conversation structure immediately clear. Adjust step probability sliders to control which assignments might change during randomization, or lock steps at 0% to keep them fixed.
Click the global Dice button to instantly randomize all unlocked step assignments for new conversational dynamics. Enable Auto Dice mode to automatically regenerate patterns at specified intervals—perfect for evolving compositions that never repeat the same way twice.
Use Euclidean or Count modes to generate structured starting points, then randomize from there. Experiment with weighted randomization to bias the conversation toward one voice or the other. Route each voice to different destinations via X-Relay for maximum sonic variety.
Toggle between Solo mode (conversation only) and Blend mode (conversation plus incoming MIDI) depending on whether you want pure generative output or want to layer the conversation with your own playing. Add global transposition and swing to taste, and use Drums mode for percussive applications.

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.
.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.
.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
