WHERE CHAOS MEETS CHORUS, AND DELAY FINDS ITS DEPTH.

TRIPLE PACK DISCOUNT: Purchase any three Mudjaq products at the same time and get an automatic 20% discount added to your cart!

Whale 1.2 isn't your typical delay—it's a sea creature of modulation. This MaxforLive device combines chorus and delay into a lush, evolving effect that swims between flanging echoes and wide stereo choruses.

By routing chorus modulation through feedback-driven delay taps, Whale 1.2 creates movement that feels organic rather than mechanical. Shape reflections with advanced diffusion, control pitch during time shifts, and choose from three distinct chorus blend modes that fundamentally change the character of the effect.

Inside you'll find:

  • Dual-mode delay engine: tempo sync and pitch control with tape-style warping or locked transitions
  • Advanced feedback: diffusion, spread, inverse phase, and early reflection options
  • Three chorus wet blend modes: three distinct signal flows for different sonic personalities
  • Flexible modulation: sine or triangle waveforms with speed, depth, and stereo width shaping
  • Spread and Phase control (new in 1.2): fine-tune the subtle nuances of the chorus
  • Chorus detail display (new in 1.2): visual readout of depth, speed, and spread with adjustable ms and Hz scale reference
  • Tone-shaping filters, harmonic drive, and protective limiter: keep your signal characterful and controlled
  • Visual main UI: circular display showing delay time as radius and chorus movement as animated waves

Whether you're crafting ambient oceans or glitchy grooves, Whale 1.2 adds dimension and drift to your sound palette. From subtle spatial enhancement to wildly experimental textures, this device brings the tide in.

Designed for Ableton Live with MaxforLive—chaos and control, walking the edge together.

Overview & Inspiration

Whale 1.2 reimagines how chorus and delay interact. Instead of running a typical LFO through a standard delay line, this MaxforLive device routes chorus modulation through feedback-driven delay taps, creating movement that feels organic and alive.

The result is a hybrid effect that swims between subtle flanging echoes and vast, ocean-like stereo choruses. Whether you’re adding gentle shimmer to vocals, crafting ambient soundscapes, or designing experimental textures, Whale 1.2 brings dimension and drift to your sound palette.

Features & Highlights

Dual-Mode Delay Engine — Switch between milliseconds or synced note divisions (including triplets and dotted notes) for rhythmic precision. Control whether pitch shifts when you change delay time, or keep it locked for clean transitions. The pitch adjustment slider lets you dial in tape-style warping or maintain digital stability. Crucially, when using synced (dot) mode, delay time changes with no pitch shift at all.

Advanced Feedback Control — Shape your feedback with diffusion that transforms simple echoes into reverb-like tails. The diffusion spread parameter controls reflection density—from tight, metallic slaps to wide, cathedral washes. Toggle diffusion on or off as needed. Inverse feedback flips the signal phase for creative comb filtering, while the early reflection control adds textural wetness to the tail.

Three Chorus Wet Blend Modes — The signal flow changes fundamentally depending on which mode you select. Mode 1 (more natural) routes the signal through Chorus then into the feedback Delay loop, with the wet output tapped from the delay. Mode 2 (chorus emphasis) feeds the signal into the Chorus first, with the wet signal taken directly from the chorus stage before the delay loop continues. Mode 3 (delay and chorus emphasis) sends the signal into the Delay first, then through the Chorus, with the wet output taken from the chorus—emphasising both effects equally. Each mode offers a distinct sonic personality from a single device.

Flexible Chorus Modulation — Adjust chorus speed, depth, and shape (sine or triangle waveforms) to craft everything from gentle detuning to seasick wobble. The delay flutter control introduces stereo width variation, while the wide parameter expands the stereo field. The main visual display shows delay time as the radius of the circular waveform and chorus speed and depth as the animated wave lines within it.

Spread and Phase (New in 1.2) — Whale 1.2 introduces dedicated Spread and Phase controls that allow you to adjust the subtle nuances of the chorus character. These sit alongside the existing speed and depth parameters and give you finer control over how multiple chorus voices relate to one another.

Chorus Detail Display (New in 1.2) — A dedicated waveform readout displays the current status of Depth, Speed, and Spread parameters in real time. The display shows one full cycle horizontally, with the vertical axis representing the maximum value. You can set independent reference scale values for milliseconds and Hz to improve readability—this scale setting affects display only and does not alter the sound.

Tone Shaping & Protection — A high-pass and low-pass filter pair tames unwanted frequencies in the wet signal. Drive adds harmonic saturation, with an adjustable Asymmetry parameter for additional tonal character. The built-in limiter with a configurable ceiling prevents feedback from spiralling into distortion, keeping your signal clean even during the most experimental sessions.

How to Use

Drop Whale 1.2 onto any audio track in Ableton Live. Start with conservative settings for lush, wide chorusing on pads, vocals, or guitars. Push the diffusion and feedback for massive ambient washes. Experiment with the three wet modes to find how the effect best complements your source material—Mode 1 for natural space, Mode 2 when the chorus needs to breathe, and Mode 3 when you want both the delay and chorus to share the foreground.

For rhythmic experimentation, sync the delay to your project tempo using note or dot mode—dot mode is especially useful when you need the delay time to change without any pitch artefacts. Modulate the chorus depth via automation for evolving movement. The flutter control adds stereo drift to static sounds, while inverse feedback creates metallic, resonant textures perfect for sound design.

Use the new Spread and Phase controls to add subtle differences between chorus voices, giving your sound a more complex, living quality. Dial in the Chorus detail display scale to match the depth and speed range you are working in, so the waveform readout stays readable at any setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: Whale 1.2 is a MaxforLive audio effect for Ableton Live. Rather than using a typical LFO inside a standard delay, it plays chorus modulation through feedback-driven delay taps, letting you create everything from basic flanger echo sounds to wide, ocean-like chorus echoes.

A: To use Whale 1.2, you will need:

  • Ableton Live 11 Standard (with MaxforLive installed), Live 11 Suite, or higher
  • MaxforLive 8+
  • macOS or Windows

A: Yes, Whale 1.2 requires MaxforLive, which is included in Ableton Live Suite. If you are using Ableton Live Standard, you can purchase MaxforLive separately via your Ableton.com account.

A: Each mode changes the signal flow fundamentally. Mode 1 (more natural) passes the signal through Chorus then into the Delay feedback loop, with the wet output coming from the delay. Mode 2 (chorus emphasis) takes the wet output directly from the Chorus stage before it enters the delay loop, pushing the chorus character forward. Mode 3 (delay and chorus emphasis) sends the signal through Delay first, then through Chorus, with the wet output taken from the chorus stage—giving equal weight to both effects.

A: Whale 1.2 introduces two new features. First, Spread and Phase controls have been added to the Chorus section, allowing you to adjust the subtle nuances of the chorus sound. Second, a Chorus detail display now shows the current status of Depth, Speed, and Spread as a waveform readout. You can also set a reference scale value in milliseconds and Hz for this display to improve readability; this setting does not affect the sound.

A: The Chorus detail display shows a waveform representing the current Depth, Speed, and Spread parameters. The horizontal axis represents one full cycle and the vertical axis represents the maximum value. You can set separate reference scale values for milliseconds and Hz, which adjusts how the display is drawn for easier reading at different settings. Changing the scale value only affects the visual readout and has no effect on the audio.

A: The delay time can be set in milliseconds (ms mode) or synced to your project tempo using note values, triplets, or dotted notes. In ms mode and standard note mode, changing the delay time causes a pitch shift in the delayed signal, similar to tape delay behaviour—you can adjust the speed of this pitch change. In dot mode, changing the delay time produces no pitch shift at all, which is useful when you want clean tempo-synced transitions without any pitch artefacts.

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.

.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.

.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
