Cute Little Sequencer by Alexkid
What if you could generate compelling melodic patterns, unexpected basslines, and evolving polyrhythms with just a few clicks? Cute Little Sequencer by AlexKid transforms sequencing from a technical task into an intuitive creative act—delivering instant inspiration for modern electronic music production.
This analog-inspired 8-step sequencer packs sophisticated functionality into a deceptively simple interface. Whether you’re working with software instruments in Ableton Live or sending MIDI to your hardware synths, Cute Little Sequencer turns happy accidents into musical gold.
Overview & Inspiration
Designed by AlexKid—the creative mind behind the legendary Instant Haus—Cute Little Sequencer embodies the philosophy that powerful tools don’t need to be complex. Born from the golden age of analog sequencers, it captures that hands-on immediacy while adding modern intelligence through forced scales, independent line lengths, and intelligent randomization.
At its core are three independent sequence lines—gate, pitch, and velocity—each with its own length (1-8 steps) and play mode. This architecture creates the perfect environment for polyrhythmic experimentation, where a 5-step pitch sequence dancing against a 7-step gate pattern generates endlessly evolving musical phrases.
Features & Highlights
Three Independent Sequence Lines:
The Gate Line defines your rhythm. Each step can be on or off, creating patterns from simple four-on-the-floor to complex syncopated grooves. Clock division is adjustable (defaulting to 16th notes), with additional swing and note length controls for humanizing your sequences.
The Pitch Line handles melody. Unlike traditional sequencers that let you program any note, Cute Little Sequencer forces all notes into your selected key and scale—using the same scale library as Ableton’s Push 2. This intelligent constraint means every random generation stays musical, turning experimentation into instant usable results rather than discordant chaos.
The Velocity Line adds dynamics. Program MIDI velocity values from 0-127 for each step, or use the velocity range control to tame extreme values and maintain consistent output levels across your patterns.
Polyrhythmic Creativity:
Each sequence line features four play modes: forward, backward, bidirectional, and random. Combined with independent line lengths, this creates mesmerizing polyrhythmic relationships. Set a 3-step pitch sequence against a 5-step gate pattern, and watch as the melodic emphasis shifts with each repetition—creating hours of variation from a single programmed pattern.
Intelligent Randomization:
Stuck in a creative rut? Hit the randomize button. Each line features individual randomization, or use the global random function to generate complete new patterns instantly. Because pitch is forced to scale, even fully random sequences remain musical and immediately usable in your productions.
Don’t like the result? Hit random again. It’s instant inspiration at the press of a button—perfect for happy accidents, unexpected basslines, and intriguing acid loops that would take hours to program manually.
Advanced Mode—Step vs. Gate:
The advanced mode toggle switches between two fundamental sequencing philosophies. In Step Mode, each sequence line advances with the defined clock division—creating traditional locked-together patterns. In Gate Mode, the pitch and velocity lines only advance when the gate sequence triggers—enabling even more complex polyrhythmic relationships and creating sequences that evolve in surprising ways.
Push 2 Integration:
All parameters are fully mapped to Ableton’s Push 2, enabling hands-on control without touching your mouse. Adjust sequence lengths, change play modes, trigger randomization, and program steps directly from Push’s encoders and pads—keeping your workflow fluid and tactile.
How to Use
Drop Cute Little Sequencer onto any MIDI track in Ableton Live—before your instruments, or on a track sending MIDI to external hardware. Select your key and scale, then either program steps manually using the dedicated controls or hit the randomize buttons for instant pattern generation.
Adjust the clock division to match your track’s groove (16ths for fast patterns, 8ths for slower melodic lines). Use the swing control to add pocket and groove. Set independent lengths for each line—try a 5-step pitch against an 8-step gate for evolving patterns that never quite repeat.
The on/off toggle at the bottom left lets you mute the sequencer while it continues running in the background—perfect for arrangement work and live performance builds.
For acid basslines: Use gate mode with short note lengths and high randomization on the pitch line. For evolving pads: Try longer note lengths with bidirectional or random play modes. For rhythmic stabs: Focus on the gate line with consistent pitch values.

Frequently Asked Questions
Cute Little Sequencer requires Ableton Live with Max for Live installed. It is compatible with Ableton Live Suite, or Live Standard/Intro with a separate Max for Live licence.
Yes, the device outputs standard MIDI so you can route it to any hardware synth or drum machine connected to your setup, as well as any software instrument inside Ableton Live.
Cute Little Sequencer is analog-inspired in its approach, turning happy accidents into musical patterns through an intuitive 8-step interface. The results feel organic rather than purely random, giving you usable melodies and basslines quickly without deep programming.
The device supports evolving polyrhythms, so you can go well beyond standard 4/4 step sequencing and create more complex, shifting rhythmic patterns typical of modern electronic music.
After purchase you will receive a downloadable file which you drag into your Ableton Live User Library or directly onto a MIDI track. Full installation instructions are included with the download.
Not at all. The whole philosophy behind the device is that powerful functionality should feel simple and immediate. The interface is designed so you can get inspiring results within minutes, regardless of your experience level.
It was designed with modern electronic music in mind and works brilliantly for house, techno, ambient, and any genre where evolving melodic patterns and basslines are central. That said, its MIDI output makes it flexible enough to use across virtually any style.
Important Information
V1.0.0 – Initial Release
Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.
.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.
.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
