Noah Pred unleashes the full capabilities of Pattern Engine 2.0 in Live 12, building generative techno grooves from scratch with reactive automation, step-sequenced randomization, and layered MIDI transformation—all captured in real-time.

Noah Pred Unlocks Generative MIDI Performance with Pattern Engine in Live 12

In this deep dive, Noah Pred takes us through an exhaustive and exploratory performance session using Pattern Engine 2.0—a Max for Live MIDI sequencer purpose-built for generative sequencing and evolving musical structures. Inspired originally by the ML185, Pred developed this tool to deliver permutative sequencing capabilities for installation and live use.

Kicking things off with a simple Wavetable synth in G minor, he showcases how Pattern Engine can build structured yet ever-changing sequences through randomization, LFO automation, and novel muting systems. With a 16-step grid as the foundation, he walks us through advanced cycle manipulation, auto-randomization intervals, invert muting, and trigger-based step progression.

He captures evolving melodies and rhythms in MIDI clips using real-time resampling, while incorporating LFO-driven modulations and scale-locked transpositions to maintain harmonic coherence. From controlled chaos to curated randomness, Pattern Engine opens the door to melodic unpredictability without sacrificing musicality.

Midway through, he routes Pattern Engine output into a multi-instrument rack mapped across octaves, introducing dynamic textures with Operator, Collision, and Drift—then injects performance variety with MIDI AutoDubber for reactive dub delays.

In the final stretch, Noah constructs a generative jam complete with auto-transposing chord stabs, randomized breakbeat slicing, advanced per-step randomization settings, and MIDI sequencing hacks that morph even static loops into breathing entities.

This isn’t just a tutorial—it’s a full-scale generative performance philosophy built around improvisation, modular thinking, and endless musical potential.
