Smart XL by Isotonik Studios

ADVANCED LIVE PARAMETER CONTROL

Smart is a Max4Live device that can be used to control up to 16 individual parameters at a time. Each parameter gets it’s own Smart Graph where you can draw how you’d like the parameter to be modulated as the main dial is turned.

Like Macro Mapping in an Effects Rack you can define the minimum and maximum value for the parameter range, however uniquely you can define when the parameter begins and ends reacting to a master dial being turned. You can even plot a specific path for the modulation which can also be curved…

Extremely next level device. I had been looking for something like this for awhile and existing devices made by other people were wonky, buggy and not nearly as well thought out as SMART. Rather than modulation working as A to B,B to A or somewhere in between, SMART allows one gesture of a knob movement to go from a-b-c-b-d-a or anything else you can imagine. It opens doors to audition sound design ideas on the fly in a dynamic way that is only otherwise possible through static tedious manual automation in Ableton. Supremely useful to audition what multiple parameter automation will sound like across multiple channels, instruments and effects alike. The GUI is clever in it's execution. It's easy to use and it's only limited by your imagination. Good stuff!

Smart XL is a Max4Live device that can be used to control up to 16 individual parameters at a time. Each parameter gets it’s own Smart Graph where you can draw how you’d like the parameter to be modulated as the main dial is turned.

“Smart, is a mind-numbing rack that allows you to redefine how a parameter is modulating from a linear signal path. The modulation redefinition is achieved through the use of 8 Smart Graphs which make up a bank. And, the craziest part is that all of these modulations route back to one ‘Smart Dial’. Basically, one turn of a Smart Dial can wreak some serious havoc. Throw a few of them into your set and well… you’ve got a nuclear meltdown.”

ASK.AUDIO

In just one use case you could map the Track Volume, Bass, Mid and Treble so as the master Smart dial is turned the treble of the track will be brought in straight away, the mids coming in at a quarter turn and the the bass from the halfway point whilst the volume increases steadily…

With the actual values of mapped parameters displayed in the device setting up is simple. Just click on a parameter in Live then click on an un-mapped Smart Dial, choose whether to have the progress as standard or reversed and set the Min & Max. It’s as simple as that to get up and running

Frequently Asked Questions

Smart XL is a Max for Live device that lets you control up to 16 parameters simultaneously from a single master dial. Unlike standard macro mapping, you can draw custom modulation curves for each parameter and define exactly when each one starts and stops reacting as the dial is turned, giving you far more nuanced and expressive control.

Each of the 16 parameters gets its own Smart Graph, which is a drawable modulation curve that determines how that parameter responds as the master dial moves. You can sketch linear paths, curves, or complex shapes to create entirely unique modulation behaviour for every parameter in the rack.

Yes, Smart XL can map to parameters across your Live set, not just within a single device or rack. This makes it ideal for building performance macros that span multiple instruments and effects simultaneously.

Smart XL requires Ableton Live and Max for Live, so you will need either Ableton Live Suite or a copy of Live Standard with a separate Max for Live licence. We recommend checking the product page for the minimum supported versions of Live and Max for Live.

After purchase you will receive a download containing the Max for Live device file. Simply drag and drop it into your Ableton Live set or save it to your User Library for easy access in future sessions.

Smart XL excels in live performance and sound design scenarios where you want a single gesture to trigger complex, multi-parameter changes in a very specific and controlled way. It is particularly powerful for building expressive performance rigs, filter sweeps, layered transitions, and custom macro controls that go well beyond what a standard effects rack can offer.

Yes, your Smart Graph settings are saved within the device as part of your Ableton Live set or preset, so you can save the device as a preset and recall it across different projects whenever needed.

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.

.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.

.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
