This walkthrough covers a two-tool approach that gets you from nothing to a working drum arrangement faster than browsing samples and dragging clips, without locking you into a fixed loop.

What It Does

The workflow combines two tools. Style Rhythm Generator by Sidebrain handles pattern generation. You pick a style, shuffle individual lanes for kick, closed hats, open hats, and percussion separately, and generate a MIDI clip alongside a drum rack loaded with the matching kit sounds. The paid version gives you a larger pattern library, but the free version covers the essentials.

XLN Audio EXO takes care of sound selection. Rather than auditioning samples one by one, EXO lets you browse and swap entire kits in seconds, lock the sounds you want to keep, and then browse further. The key tweak here is a custom drum rack that maps each EXO lane to its own MIDI and audio channel, giving you individual processing per sound rather than committing everything to EXO’s internal effects chain.

The two tools address different parts of the problem. Style Rhythm Generator solves pattern creation. EXO solves sound selection. Together they replicate the speed of a hardware drum machine workflow inside Ableton Live.

How to Use It

• Generate a starting pattern: Open Style Rhythm Generator, choose a style, and use the per-lane shuffle controls to create a pattern across kick, hats, and percussion.
• Load a kit with the pattern: Use the kit slider to load a matching drum rack, then click Create MIDI Clip to drop the pattern into your session.
• Replace sounds using EXO: Load the custom EXO drum rack. Browse kits inside EXO’s space view, which surfaces both EXO’s built-in kits and your own sample library at once.
• Lock sounds you want to keep: Use EXO’s lock function to protect individual sounds while continuing to browse the rest of the kit.
• Free up individual processing: Once you are happy with the pattern, export the MIDI clip from EXO and unsync it. Each pad in the drum rack now plays a single EXO sound, so you can add effects such as saturation or compression to individual channels without affecting the full kit.
• Process the full kit with Drum Ticks: Apply XLN Audio’s Drum Ticks plugin for cohesive drum bus processing. Adjust room size, reverb level, compression, and the Boom knob to tune the low end to the key of your track.
