How to Record Guitar Into Ableton Move (The Cable You Actually Need)

Recording electric guitar or bass directly into Ableton Move is entirely possible, but there is one critical piece of hardware most tutorials skip straight past: the cable. Get that right, and the rest of the process is surprisingly straightforward.
What It Does
This walkthrough by Taylor Fiore covers the full process of capturing a live guitar or bass performance onto an audio track inside Ableton Move. It goes beyond simple recording to address the practical challenge of making a dry, unprocessed guitar signal sound genuinely usable using only the effects built into Move itself.
Because Move does not include a dedicated amp simulator or guitar-focused processing chain, Taylor works through the available tools methodically, using the Saturator, Erosion, and Dynamics devices to add character, control dynamics, and shape the overall tone of the recorded signal.
The second half of the video explores audio clip manipulation, including transposing recordings, adjusting tempo to stretch or compress the clip, and working with fine-tuned detune values in cents using the Shift modifier.
How to Use It
- Get the right cable: You need a TS to TRS cable wired to carry a mono signal on both the tip and ring. A standard TS to TRS cable will only output to the left channel; the specific mono-to-stereo wiring is essential.
- Set up your audio track: On Move, scroll the track type selector all the way up to convert a track to an audio track. Select your pad, then press the record button and choose Line In as your input source.
- Set gain and monitoring: Adjust the gain encoder while playing to set a healthy recording level. Enable monitoring if you are using headphones; leave it off if you are relying on Move’s built-in speaker to avoid feedback.
- Record your performance: Select a pad, arm recording, and use the count-in to capture your take. Move’s clips work the same way as Ableton Live’s Session View clips.
- Shape the tone with Dynamics: Add a Dynamics device as your first processor. Bring the threshold down to apply compression and even out the dynamics of the dry guitar signal.
- Add Saturator for harmonic colour: Use the Saturator after Dynamics. The Analog Clip mode works well for adding warmth without pushing into heavy distortion. Use the dry/wet control to blend the effect in subtly.
- Use Erosion for texture: Erosion adds digital grit and character. Keep the amount low; a small dose adds interest without overwhelming the original signal.
- Manipulate the clip: Use the Transpose encoder to shift pitch by semitones, or hold Shift and use the same encoder to detune in cents. Adjust Tempo to stretch or compress the clip length, bearing in mind that faster tempo shortens the recording.
Why It Matters
Move is designed as a compact, self-contained instrument, but that does not mean it is limited to software synthesis and samples. This tutorial demonstrates that with the correct cable and a working understanding of the onboard processing, guitar and bass players can integrate Move into a live or studio setup without additional hardware.
