Mutable Instruments Clouds is one of the most iconic granular processors ever made. With the original hardware increasingly hard to find, a Max for Live port running the same open-source code has become a genuine alternative for Ableton users. This walkthrough puts both side by side across every mode so you can hear exactly where they converge and where they part ways.
What It Does
Clouds is a texture synthesiser that captures a rolling buffer of incoming audio and lets you sculpt it into granular clouds, stretched pads, looping delays, and spectral chaos. The hardware and Max for Live versions share the same underlying code, but the analogue signal path, the bit depth of the hardware buffer, and the sheer physicality of turning real knobs all introduce subtle differences in character.
The Max for Live device maps every parameter faithfully: position, size, pitch, density, texture, blend, feedback, and reverb are all present, and the four processing modes appear in the same order as the hardware LEDs. One notable addition in the software version is a size-randomness slider, added specifically to bridge the gap between fixed knob control and the continuous voltage modulation you get from CV inputs on a Eurorack module.
The most audible difference across the comparison is tonal cleanliness. The hardware runs at 16-bit stereo with a buffer of roughly one second, giving it a lightly degraded, characterful quality. The Max for Live version processes at the full resolution of your audio interface, which produces a noticeably cleaner and, in some modes, more polished result. Whether that is a benefit or a drawback depends entirely on what you are trying to achieve.
How to Use It
- Signal flow: Route your audio source into Clouds, either through a Eurorack mixer into your interface or directly as a track input in Ableton. Set your input gain before touching anything else.
- Choose a mode: Start with granular mode. On hardware, hold the mode button for five seconds until the LEDs flash orange, then step through. In the Max for Live device, click one of the four mode selectors at the top of the interface.
- Set position and size: Position scrubs through the buffer from start to end. Size controls grain width, with small values producing rapid repetition and large values smoothing everything into broad textures.
- Adjust density and texture: At noon, density is neutral. Turn counter-clockwise for regular timed grain intervals, clockwise for random triggering. Texture in granular mode cycles through different grain envelope shapes, from square to sine to ramp, each with a distinct rhythmic feel.
- Use freeze creatively: Hit freeze to lock the buffer and stop it rewriting. On hardware, holding freeze in looping delay and reverse mode plays the buffer backwards. The Max for Live version does not replicate this specific behaviour.
- Explore stretch mode: Here the texture parameter shifts to a high-pass and low-pass filter rather than a grain envelope. Pitch shifts produce pronounced tape-style artefacts on the hardware that are noticeably smoother in the software.
- Try looping delay mode: Position becomes loop start point and size becomes loop length. Moving position while audio plays produces tape-style phase effects on hardware. The density knob acts as diffusion, adding a spatial spread rather than literal repeats.
- Add reverb last: The built-in reverb in the Max for Live version is cleaner than the hardware equivalent. Dial it in after shaping your granular texture rather than at the start, so it does not mask what the processing is actually doing.
Why It Matters
The Clouds hardware is a secondhand-only proposition now, and units in good condition are not cheap. The Max for Live port delivers a remarkably faithful translation of the same algorithms inside Ableton Live, with the added convenience of automation, total recall, and that size-randomness parameter for introducing modulation without a modular system. The hardware retains a tactile warmth and a certain gritty character that comes from its lower-resolution buffer, which some producers will actively prefer. For everyone else, the Max for Live version is a serious granular tool that earns its place in any session.
