  • Chance Zone — select random samples from Sampler zones with weighted probability
  • Chance Midinote — set global probability for each MIDI note across your entire set
  • Chance Start — vary Simpler sample start positions for instant variation

Inspired by Brian Eno’s generative systems, this pack refines the art of controlled chaos. Whether you’re programming drums that never sound mechanical, building evolving synth textures, or exploring generative composition, Chance Pack THREE turns probability into an intelligent compositional tool.

Despite some of Ableton's updates in Live 11 and 12 getting close to approximating the same functionality of what's available in Chance Pack 3, there's still of very useful tools in here that you still can't achieve with just stock devices. Particularly with the weighting functionality. These devices feel more catered to drums/perc, but are endlessly fun to experiment with on any material

Andrew

I really love the previous two Chance Packs and use them all the time. After a coupled of hours with this one, I know I'm going to be using it just as much! Fewer devices in this pack but they're all exceptionally good. All genuinely useful devices and really easy to use.

Chance Pack Three by LDM Design

Probability in music production often feels like a gamble. Set every note at 50% chance in Ableton Live, and sometimes you’ll get clusters of sound, other times complete silence. Chance Pack THREE brings intelligent structure to controlled chaos, ensuring your probability-driven patterns maintain musical consistency while staying beautifully unpredictable.

This third installment in LDM Design’s celebrated Chance series refines the art of probabilistic composition. While Live 11 and 12 introduced native per-note probability, Chance Pack THREE goes further by analyzing entire sections, implementing round robin algorithms, and offering weighted probability across six specialized devices. The result? Randomness that actually sounds musical.

Overview & Inspiration

Inspired by Brian Eno’s pioneering work with generative systems, Chance Pack THREE continues LDM Design’s mission to bring controlled chaos into Ableton Live. Each device addresses a specific limitation in standard probability workflows, whether it’s the uneven distribution of per-note probability, the need for natural-sounding sample variations, or the desire to randomize entire instrument chains without sacrificing musicality.

The pack’s modular architecture means you can combine devices from any Chance pack to build increasingly sophisticated probability systems. Stack Chance Array with Chance Midinote for complex rhythmic variations. Layer Chance Chain with Chance Robin for evolving timbral shifts. The possibilities expand exponentially.

The Six Devices

Chance Array revolutionizes how probability affects your patterns. Instead of calculating probability per note (which can leave awkward gaps or unexpected clusters), it analyzes a section of notes and ensures the exact percentage you specify plays every time. Set it to 50% with 16 notes, and you’ll always get 8 notes, randomly selected with each pass. Musical consistency meets creative unpredictability.

Chance Robin brings professional round robin playback to any MIDI setup. Play a root note, and the device randomly selects from a range of notes without repeating the previous selection. Perfect for natural-sounding drums with multiple velocity layers or creating evolving melodic patterns. Four modes offer different behaviors: Round Robin (randomized without repeats), Sequential (loops through in order), Palindrome (forward then backward), and Weighted Probability (set custom likelihood for each note).

Chance Chain applies the same round robin concept to Instrument Racks, randomly routing your MIDI to different chains. Build a rack with multiple synths, then let Chance Chain decide which instrument plays each note. Whether you’re after subtle timbral variation or dramatic sonic shifts, the four playback modes give you complete control over the chaos.

Chance Zone targets the Zone section of Ableton’s Sampler instrument, randomly selecting which sample plays from your zone setup. Load multiple sample variations into zones, and Chance Zone ensures natural-sounding variation with every hit. The weighted probability mode lets you favor certain samples over others, perfect for realistic drum programming where the primary hit should sound most often.

Chance Midinote provides global probability control for every MIDI note passing through. Unlike setting probability in individual clips, this device lets you establish default probability levels that persist across your entire set. Keep your kick at 100% while hi-hats sit at 60%, and every new clip respects those settings automatically. The interface mirrors Ableton’s Drum Rack and automatically syncs when you adjust Drum Rack note visibility.

Chance Start randomizes the sample start position in Simpler devices, adding instant variation to any sample. Even with a single sample, you can achieve natural-sounding variation by varying where playback begins. Set the maximum start time, and the device randomly selects positions within that range, creating subtle or dramatic differences with every trigger.

How to Use

Insert any Chance Pack THREE device before the instrument or MIDI clip you want to affect. For Chance Array and Chance Midinote, simply drop them in front of your instrument and adjust the probability settings. For devices targeting specific Ableton instruments (Chance Chain, Chance Zone, Chance Start), place them directly before the corresponding Instrument Rack, Sampler, or Simpler device.

The real power emerges when you combine multiple Chance devices in creative ways. Use Chance Array to control the density of notes reaching a Drum Rack, then use Chance Midinote to set different probability levels for each drum. Follow that with Chance Robin to vary which of several snare samples plays. Three devices, infinite variation, complete musical control.

Each device features LDM Design’s signature clean, intuitive interface with large knobs and clear visual feedback. Parameters are fully mappable to Push, MIDI controllers, or automation lanes for live performance manipulation.

Ideal For

Producers exploring generative composition and probability-based workflows. Electronic musicians seeking natural variation in drum programming. Live performers who want controlled unpredictability in their sets. Sound designers building evolving, non-repetitive textures. Anyone working with the Chance Pack series who wants to expand their probabilistic toolkit.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: Chance Pack THREE is a collection of 6 MaxforLive MIDI devices that bring intelligent structure to probability-based composition in Ableton Live. The pack includes devices for section-based probability (Chance Array), round robin sample playback (Chance Robin, Chance Zone), instrument chain randomization (Chance Chain), global MIDI note probability (Chance Midinote), and sample start variation (Chance Start). Inspired by Brian Eno’s generative systems, these tools ensure your probabilistic patterns maintain musical consistency while staying unpredictable.

A: Yes, Chance Pack THREE consists entirely of MaxforLive devices.

A: MaxforLive is a platform that integrates the visual programming environment Max with Ableton Live, allowing users to create and use custom audio, MIDI, and control devices.

A: While Live 11 and 12 include per-note probability, this can produce uneven results with unexpected clusters or gaps. Chance Pack THREE’s devices offer more musical control: Chance Array ensures exact note counts per section, round robin devices prevent immediate repetition for natural variation, and weighted probability modes let you favor certain outcomes over others. The pack also targets specific Ableton instruments (Sampler zones, Instrument Rack chains, Simpler start times) in ways native probability cannot.

A: Absolutely! The Chance series is designed with a modular approach. You can mix and match devices from Chance Pack TWO, Chance TEN, and Chance Pack THREE to build increasingly sophisticated probability systems. Each pack complements the others, expanding your creative possibilities.

V1.0.0 – Initial Release -October 2022

Our Products are generally provided as Zip file downloads which in all cases will need to be extracted and saved to your hard drive prior to installation. Details on the different file type provided and what to do with them are below.

.alp Files – These are Ableton Live Packs and will either install directly into the Packs Section of the browser of Ableton Live or ask you to save them to your hard drive. For packs that install to the library, when you double click on them you will see a pop up window asking you to confirm that installation is ok as the files are described as “Legacy”. This is fine and you are ok to proceed, the packs are created using the format for an earlier version of Live and so remain compatible with the current version.

.amxd files – These are individual MaxforLive Devices and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive. We’d advise creating a folder for them and then adding that folder as a location within the Places section of Lives Browser.
