PreRoll by LDM Design

Drum rolls should feel dynamic, expressive, and alive. Simple beat repeat effects sound mechanical, while manually programming velocity values for every roll eats up production time and rarely captures the nuance of real performance. preRoll solves both problems with an intuitive system that generates realistic, evolving drum patterns and rolls with sophisticated velocity modulation—all triggerable with a single touch or MIDI note.

This powerful MIDI effect combines velocity pattern sequencing with multi-breakpoint envelope modulation across eight independent units. Each unit can store a complete drum roll or rhythmic pattern up to 16 steps long, then apply a flexible modulation envelope that shapes dynamics over time with curve control. Whether you’re triggering snare rolls manually during live performance, programming ghost note patterns, or creating complex rudiments and paradiddles, preRoll delivers expressive, nuanced results that sound naturally human rather than rigidly quantized.

Overview & Two-Layer Architecture

preRoll’s genius lies in its two-layer approach to drum roll creation. The Pattern Sequencer defines the rhythmic velocity pattern that loops as long as the unit is triggered—program a 16-step velocity sequence with accents and ghost notes, and it repeats for the duration of your roll. Then the Modulation Envelope sits on top, dynamically shaping those velocities over time with multi-breakpoint curves. This creates drum rolls that don’t just repeat the same velocities—they build, decay, swell, and evolve as they play.

Imagine triggering a snare roll that starts quiet, gradually crescendos to a peak, then decays back down. The pattern sequencer provides the rhythmic foundation (perhaps alternating strong and weak hits in a realistic paradiddle), while the modulation envelope controls the overall dynamic arc. This combination produces results far more sophisticated and musical than either approach alone.

Eight Independent Units

preRoll provides eight completely independent units, each capable of storing its own velocity pattern, modulation envelope, trigger settings, and MIDI note filter. Unit 1 might contain a classic snare roll with a quick crescendo envelope. Unit 2 could hold a tom roll with a longer build. Unit 3 might feature a fast hi-hat flutter with minimal dynamic change. Unit 4 could be a complex paradiddle pattern for fills.

This multi-unit architecture means you can build a complete library of pre-rolled patterns ready to trigger instantly during production or live performance. No more hunting through MIDI clips or manually programming velocities for every fill. Your eight most-used drum rolls and patterns are always one button press or MIDI note away, each with its own perfectly crafted dynamics.

Pattern Sequencer – Up to 16 Steps

Each unit’s pattern sequencer offers up to 16 velocity steps, adjustable via intuitive click-and-drag editing. Set alternating loud and soft velocities for ghost note patterns. Program triplet feels with accented downbeats. Create complex rudiments where specific beats emphasize naturally. The Randomize button instantly generates varied patterns for experimentation, while step count adjustment (2-16 steps) lets you create patterns of any length.

Step Duration controls the rhythmic resolution of your pattern, from whole notes down to 64th notes (and triplet values). A 16-step pattern at 16th note resolution creates a one-beat roll, while the same pattern at 32nd notes produces a half-beat flutter. This tempo-relative timing ensures your rolls always stay locked to your project tempo and feel rhythmically appropriate.

Modulation Envelope – Multi-Breakpoint Flexibility

The modulation envelope transforms your repeating velocity pattern into evolving, expressive performances. Create as many breakpoints as needed by clicking in the envelope display, then drag them to shape your dynamic curve. Need a slow crescendo? Start low, place a breakpoint high at the end, and adjust the curve between them. Want a quick swell followed by a long decay? Add multiple breakpoints with different curve shapes between each pair.

The envelope duration (adjustable from 1/4 beat up to 16 beats) sets how long the modulation cycle takes to complete. Choose whether the envelope plays once then holds its final value, or loops continuously for as long as the pattern triggers. Curve control between breakpoints creates smooth transitions (linear, exponential, logarithmic) rather than abrupt jumps, ensuring musical crescendos and diminuendos that sound naturally performed.

The Humanize control adds random velocity variation to every note, preventing robotic consistency. Set a maximum random amount, and each MIDI note gets varied within that range. This subtle imperfection makes programmed rolls sound like actual human performances—no drummer plays with perfectly consistent velocity.

Flexible Triggering Options

preRoll offers two distinct triggering modes to fit any workflow. Manual Trigger Mode gives you a button (mappable to Push, MIDI controller, or automation) that triggers the pattern for as long as you hold it down. The incoming MIDI note-off is ignored—hold the trigger, and the roll continues indefinitely until you release. Perfect for live performance where you want to control roll duration expressively in real-time.

Always On Mode triggers the pattern automatically whenever a MIDI note plays, processing for the duration of that note. Use MIDI note filtering to assign specific units to specific drum kit notes. Map Unit 1 to your snare (D1), Unit 2 to your high tom (F1), Unit 3 to your floor tom (A1), and suddenly every time you play those notes, they automatically trigger their assigned roll patterns. Program your rolls once, then play them like any other drum hit.

This workflow is particularly powerful with Drum Racks. Duplicate your snare sample to a new cell, then use preRoll’s note filter to process only that duplicate cell. Now you have the original snare playing normally, and a separate MIDI note that always triggers your snare roll. Build fills and patterns by simply programming which notes to play—the dynamics are already handled.

Swing & Global Controls

The global Swing control adds groove timing to all note output, shifting alternate notes forward or backward to create shuffle feels. Choose 8th or 16th note swing resolution, then dial in the amount. Even if your roll pattern has straight timing, swing makes it feel loose and groovy, with notes landing slightly off the grid in musically pleasing ways.

Push Integration

preRoll is fully optimized for Ableton Push 2 and Push 3 (including Push 3 Standalone mode). All eight units are accessible from Push’s interface, with encoders mapped to key parameters for hands-on control during performance. Trigger rolls, adjust envelope shapes, modify humanization, and tweak swing amounts—all without touching your computer.

Creative Applications

Live Performance Rolls: Map manual triggers to pad controllers or Push pads. During performance, hold a pad to trigger snare rolls, tom fills, or hi-hat flutters exactly when you need them, releasing to stop.

Automatic Fill Variations: Use Always On mode with note filtering. Duplicate drum samples to new Drum Rack cells, assign preRoll units to process those duplicates, then program fills using those “roll” notes. Every fill automatically has perfect dynamics without manual velocity editing.

Rudiments & Paradiddles: Program complex drum rudiments (flams, drags, ratamacues) as 8-16 step velocity patterns. The modulation envelope adds dynamic expression on top of the technical pattern, creating realistic-sounding rudiments that breathe with the music.

Evolving Textures: Use long envelope durations (8-16 beats) with looping enabled to create slowly evolving rhythmic textures where velocity patterns cycle through complex dynamic shapes over extended periods.

Hybrid Approach: Combine manual triggers with note filtering. Set up some units for specific drum notes (Always On), while keeping others on manual triggers for spontaneous fills during performance.

How to Use

Insert preRoll as a MIDI effect before your drum instrument in Ableton Live. Choose one of the eight units, then program your velocity pattern using the pattern sequencer (up to 16 steps). Shape the modulation envelope by clicking to add breakpoints and dragging to create your dynamic curve. Set the envelope duration to determine how long the modulation cycle takes.

Choose your triggering method: Manual Trigger mode for performance control, or Always On mode with MIDI note filtering for automatic triggering on specific drum notes. Add humanization for natural variation, dial in swing for groove, and you’re ready to trigger expressive, realistic drum rolls with a single touch.

All parameters are fully mappable to Push, MIDI controllers, or automation. Automate envelope shapes for evolving fills throughout your track, map triggers to pad controllers for live performance, or use Push’s interface for hands-on control of all eight units simultaneously.
